which one is more beneficial and has anyone ever tried one vs the other? Opinions please

 

I tried an 85mm SLP MAF and it was not worth it, it kept throwing a code and the tuners said they could tune around it but down the road it would cause more problems. I went back to the stock. Not sure about descreening it though i have also thought about trying it.

 

I have been using a descreened Delphi 85mm for
years. Was pretty dead-on for accuracy (using
truck MAF table) until I did the cam & intake, now
it's a bit off. Not enough to spend the time retuning
it though.

If you still have a stock diameter throttle and no
big motor mods then I'd recommend just descreening
the stocker. The remaining pressure drop will not
matter. I gained nothing from going to the 85mm
at the time (had already descreened the 75mm).

 

Same here - I gained nothing from swapping to a z06 screenless 85mm maf (and 85mm lid) over a stock descreened maf (w/ whisper lid).
That was on a 440rwhp h/c/i stock cube car.
As I recall, I used the maf tables from an '03 vette, and modified the table by 6% across the board. Put it on the dyno and had it professionally tuned, very little needed to be done to the maf tables. Don't quote me on the 6% though.

 

STOCK STOCK STOCK STOCK STOCK cant say it enough just leave the maf alone way way way too many ppl get sold on the advertisements for the aftermarket mafs and they are all full of crap you wont gain anything worth gaining, you could descreen your stock one but you better be careful not to touch a wire (been there done that, killed the sensor) gm did away with the screens themselves im wantin to say 02 but im not sure on the year. you probably wont gain anything noticeable from removing the screen either but if you just have to then go for it.

 

The stock "Oreo" MAF can be disassembled
and you can pop the screen without fear of
damaging the sense elements. Setting the
nose piece in a dish of paint remover overnight
makes the screen just about fall out, so you
will have it intact if you cared to go backward.
When I descreened mine I used the nose off
a donor and kept the original.

You can use the stripper-soak on the 85mm too
as long as you keep it shallow enough not to
touch the plastic part. My 85mm was tougher
to descreen and I had to hurt the honeycomb.

 

I wouldn't descreen the MAF. I installed my SLP lid on tuesday, and when I took out the MAF from the intake I noticed small bits of garbage(not sure what it was), but I wouldn't want that entering my motor. Not sure how that debris got through my filter, but it did and I'm happy my MAF screen was there.

 

I descreened mine when i was putting my lid on, i look at the screen and tried to clean it with the maf spray but it was basically black, so i removed it

 

I have had 3 f bodies for the past 8 years, and no problems what so ever descreanned my MAF you have to be very careful though when descreening it and cutting the center divider. Also clean the MAF time to time. Dirt and some oil from K/N filter may get on it and cause you to run lean. I dynoed my car once dirty and once clean MAF. I gained 1 whole point from 13.5 A/F Ratio to 12.5 A/F Ratio. When I cleaned the wires.

 

What's recommended to use to clean a MAF?

 

I used rubbing alcohol and q-tip or just buy some CRC MAF Cleaner at your local Auto shop. Be very careful when cleaning those little MAF wires. They are very brittle. Once cleaned then you should run a little richer. This is what happened to me.
