The AIR pump just pumps air into the exaust to help heat up the cats quicker

OH I KNOW I KNOW WHAT IT DOES!!!!!!

It gets in the way of you doing anything on your engine
I really hate those things, and if I ever become motivated to take them out I think I will

If you have ever heard that high pitch sound during start-up you were listening to the AIR pump. Like stated before it is for the cats and emissions. Some people say it will lessen the life of your cats by removing it. The only benefits in performance are the weight reduction(negligable). The removing of all that under the hood clutter is the real benefit from this. Check out ls1camaro.net to see the complete howto.

AIR = Air Injector Reactor

It's like pumping air into a blast furnace; helps any unburned fuel left in the exhaust gasses burn more completely. When the engine is cold, it must run rich and there is more unburnt fuel in the exhaust, so the PCM runs the AIR pump making that dentist-drill like sound. If you don't hook it back up you can save about a $100 on race headers and eliminate the underhood clutter, but you will need to go in with LS1edit and turn off the hardware test for it or the PCM will throw a SES. It won't affect emissions testing because it only runs for a while after startup.

so basically, if i do not have cats, then i should just block it off, and remove all that garbage? then get LS1 edit? will it affect performance of the car if i do not get LS1 edit for a few weeks?

thanks

No doesn't even affect performance, you just have to put up with the light.

I pulled my air system off and it definately cleans up the engine bay. The car still runs the same when it was on, i see no negative effects of pulling the system off.
