Default Truck coils

You state you used fresh plugs and wires...it would also be interesting to see what upgraded larger (lower resistance) wires and different plug varieties (multi electrode tip, indexed standard tips, etc) would do with the added voltage....nice test as it exists though...I love analytical HP improvement testing...dynos separate myth from truth

Fiddled around with the driver's side tonight. I just made some quick and easy tabs with a sheet of stainless I had laying around. The final ones (if I do go this route) will be nicer. The only "easy" holes to use are the front and back ones. I may just bolt the coil packs up with 2 bolts... lots of guys already do even with stockers.

I will continue to play with it, but this will give you an idea of what I am trying.

Yep. I mounted the ones I got from you. I have a nicer spacer being made by a machinst friend, then I'll snap a pic... but it looks essentially like the one I posted.

NOTE: To get the main coil pack harness connector (the white one on the coil rack) to meet the main lead connector I had to slide it off the metal tab under it. With the truck coil rack spaced down 1.5", the connectors wouldn't quite meet. I gently tugged on the main harness to see if I could free up enough slack, but didn't feel like exerting much force, so I popped the big white main connector off the metal tab that mounts it firm to the rack, and that gave me more than enough slack to hook them together. It's not like it will thrash around, in fact I bet it will hardly move at all. FYI, spacing the truck coil pack rack down 1.5" seems to put it at almost the exact height (between fuel rail and headers) that the stock coils were.

I had a kidney stone that sidelined me for almost 10 days, so no driving the kidney buster during that time. I'm back to 100% and hopefully this week I can log some miles and do so data logging.

From the but o meter, the car runs well. My gas mileage is up, how much, who knows, but I'm at 195miles for this tank with over a 1/4 tank to go, so we'll see what happens when I fill up.

Great bang for the buck in my book.

So what kinda buck was it? ive got 1998 heads right now but my new motor has centerbolt covers and ive been planning this coil change since this thread popped up.

all told, from those of you who have done it, what did you spend and the details on where you got your parts?

I got mine off Ebay from Petraszewsky for less than $200. That included the 8 coils mounted to the two brackets with the wiring harnesses.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that. I'm due for one. I drink several Diet Cokes or Coke Zeros a day. If I don't get kidney stones, it will be a miscarriage of justice.

I'm glad we have you doing some testing. The car that I mounted the truck coils on is "in storage" right now so I am not driving it.

CarsandWomen, same here except I got them direct from Petraszewsky. I think he goes down to the local pick and pull and gets some from time to time. I don't mind paying him a markup for his efforts, because the closest good junk yard is across town and I generally don't have the time.

I don't make a killing off of this...after gas money , time , and paypal/ebay fees...it barely makes it worth it...but hey with a Army salary every lil bit helps....haha

I know this is kind of off the topic but I get lots of PMs about the coil packs...I will be away training in the field from Jul 30th until Aug 15th...So if you send me a PM about the coils during that time period I am not ignoring you. I will respond as soon as I return.

Oh and I will have 4 complete sets for sale when I return!!!!

Well, I filled up this morning, and I got 251 miles from 15.6 gallons of gas, which equates to 16.1 mpg. Typically I get 210-215 miles per tank doing the exact same driving back and forth to work on the exact same roads. I went a little lower than usual, which is usually around 15 gallons to fillup which equates to roughly 14mpg. It's primarily stop and go driving, hence the lower number and I don't drive it easy.

So a 2mpg increase is what I noticed. We'll see what this tank full brings.

Sounds like a solid gain. Thats about $7+ savings per fill up man !! The mod will pay for itself in no time.

Thanks for the update.

I don't know how you guys are getting such an improvment in gas milage with this coil swap!

I just used up my first tank of gas, with the new D585 coils, and it all averaged out to be exactly the same milage as with my stock LS1 coils.

I'm on the second tank of gas now, maybe that will be different...we'll see.
