It's not a bad idea. A safety precaution.

Default I'm confused

So has anyone used any of these rebuild kits.

http://www.springhillautoelectric.co...d&productId=39
or
http://store.alternatorparts.com/par...lternator.aspx

They look like pretty much the same parts. They look like they have the same diodes, but the spring hill one is rated at 220 and cheaper. The alternator parts.com one is rated at 140.
Is this just marketing, is the 220 amp one worth it.

They are using WAI and Transpo chinese parts.

The 200 or 220 amp will most likely perform poorly at idle unless you
put the small 52mm pulley instead of the stock 60mm pulley.

Another problem and deception with the rectifiers, is that they advertise...
6 50amp avalanch diodes. They really have 3 negative and 3 positive diodes ... NOT 6 as they would have you believe. The means 50 amps times 3 gives you 150amps.

The Alternator parts store guy is more honest and knowledgable than the spring-hill guy. The problem with the Alternator store guy is that... it will cost you some $$$, if you want a real high-output alternator.

So the truth is in most cases, the 160amp is your best bang for the buck.

And yes most of it is advertising hype.

your old alternator had more drag on the serpentine belt. Probably had bad bearings. high mileage worn out alternator is the reason you gained mpg in the swap imo

holy S@@T did i just read that 110 amps at idle ,what are you welding, if your drawing 110 amps at idle get out the fire extinguiser cause fire is about to appear i do not think there is a single wire in your car that could handle 110 amps DC for a sustained period of more than five seconds! I only have a hundred amp service in my house so backup to myplace and hook me up!!! wow

110 amps @ idle ... yah sure.

You'll be lucky to get 20 or 30 amps, even on a so called high output alternator.

as they said before, there may have ben Less drag with the new alternator since it doesnt have to work as hard as the old one. but saying u picked up some MPG, i dont think so. thats like saying a NEW Battery would give u more MPG. sorry but these things have nothing to do with gas consumption
