Oil catch can on the cheap?
I recently bought a Spec V and was browsing E-Gay... stumbled on a fairly cheap but interesting looking catch can. Opinions?

I kind of like the sight tube they added so you can see what the level is easily.

It looks good and the price is nice.
The only things I see bad about it right away is that the bottom is tapped for a drain valve, but doesnt come with one. It also doesnt look like it can be opened to clean/maintenance it or see how the filtration works with the inlet and outlet ports being side by side. I wish it came in black.
*Edit: Looks like it comes with a drain plug, but no o-ring, so it would have to be sealed with teflon tape or something every time it's drained.

WTH... I'm not busy so I messaged him the following and will post the response:
Can you get it in black? What does it have for filtration inside or what does the inside look like? Is it possible to open it up for cleaning? Can you get a drain plug with o-ring?

You are separating oil vapor from the air. Otherwise there's no point to it. What a good can should do is collect oil while allowing other gasses to pass through and be burnt in the intake. While compact design may look nice, filtration is also a function of surface area, so too small might mean the can is less effective. The can looks really nice but IMO I wouldn't do it.
There was a catch can GP on here a few months ago and I think it's still going. I got my can, which was a somewhat reputable brand, for 94 shipped.

Well I'm by no means an expert, but I think that most catch cans I've seen used have had some sort of filtration aspect. I'm sure that can will catch quite a bit just due to gravity, I'm just not sure if it'll be as effective as some other cans. On the plus side, this can is relatively cheap and it'll be in a place where it can't really mess anything up so it'd be worth giving it a shot. If it doesn't stop the problem then you're only out $40 and if it does then you saved $60.

Here's a massive thread on catch cans. If I remember correctly a catch can has to be at least 1qt in size to be effective, and its internal baffling won't do you much good if it's design is one that gets saturated. RevXtreme makes one that actually works and they're not that expensive. Byunspeed has some good deals on them.
There's a lot of discussion about various catch cans on the market in the above thread, and I think there are only two that seem to work well, one being the RevXtreme and the other is made by Saikou Michi.

RevXtreme is the one I have. Some of my friends have had issues with earlier can models by them but mine went in just fine with no issues. I also got it thorough byunspeed for $94 shipped which wasn't bad.

The RevExtreme can uses the inside walls of the can to collect oil. The hot air with oil mist contacts the cooler inside surface of the can and it condensates on it and collects at the bottom of the can. The can is baffled in such a way that it forces the vaoprs to travel thru the entire can producing more of an opportunity for it to do it's job. The newer units have a built in PCV valve (rattle ball design).

If you're looking to go super cheap here's a write up:

I'm not sure how well it works, but it looks like it does alright. It just looks a little more involved than a catch can install and take a little more maintenance over time.

That Ebay can is just a liquid overflow can. The fittings go in and right out so not alot will get trapped. Put a clear inline fuel filter after any cheap can and you will see how much gets through.
