The fix for my endless alternator failure's
You are replacing it due to the fact it is a common failure. So yes to ensure a good connection. Yes cut wire and solder on new.
You have it all right.

Ebay has one with just one wire instead of 4. They are the same, except one comes with all 4 ports pinned and wired, the other comes with just the 1. Either one is fine.
After over a year and a half still have the one on the car that came from the junkyard. So up to you what you want to go with. I think it's way over complicating things to go buy a new shitty rebuild for 5 times the price of a junkyard alternator that will hold up better.
If I were in the position that I had time to let the car sit for a few days and was worried about the junkyard alt, I would buy a junkyard alt, take it to an alt rebuilder and tell them to test the electronics, if they are good then leave them alone and change the bearings and go on down the road...

2.how much slack is there in the 4pin wireing? I understand the alt. must be unbolted to dissconnect the 4pin connector so do you Guy's just surport it w/ 1 hand while dissconnecting w/ other hand? or have a jack stand surporting the unbolted alt.?
edit: can't remember but did I read here the 4pin connecter is unpluged from the top before unbolting the alt.?
Thanks
2 some have slack.... some dont..........i did not
3 yes....unplug the connecter or risk breaking it
do I use my hand ot unplug the connecter, or a long needle nose?
any images would help.
Thanks
Did this swap myself a few weeks ago after replacing the pump and lines, haven't had any issues since! Plus my lights don't flicker anymore. Well worth the $60 for the salvaged alternator.
