Default Help Sizing Single Exhaust: Stock LS1

So its time to start thinking about my exhaust options on my LS1 240sx.

Here is my setup:

bone stock LS1/t56 out of a 99 Camaro
LS6 Intake
C5 center dump exhaust manifolds (no long tubes, future turbo project)

Otherwise this is going to be a pretty well stock setup. Lots of the LS1 240 guys choke their exhaust all the way down to a single 3", but is this too restrictive? Would it be beneficial for me to go ahead and run a 3.5 or 4" single, or would 3" suffice on such a stock setup?

Also, does anyone have any muffler recommendations for a 3.5 or 4" setup?

Mind you, I'd love to run dual exhaust but I really don't have the room beneath the car. I'm trying to maintain maximum ground clearance, as this will be a street car.

Thinking back to my turbo 4cyl days, we always used to run 3" just because it seemed to be the standard. I guess I just have it in my mind that a single 3" would be entirely too restrictive for an LSx engine and would greatly hinder any future upgrades. Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks for the help.

Well aside from the crushed, junk y-pipe on f bodies, stock size exhaust is 3". I would say 3" is fine, especially on a stock LS1.

I have a full 3" from my TSP catted y pipe all the way back on my H/C car.

EDIT:

Are you going to have a muffler thats in 1 and out 2 like an f body has or are you talking about a single pipe all the way back and 1 muffler and 1 pipe outta the muffler?

If its that way, I would use 3.5" if youve got the room.

the muffler is gonna have to be a single in and out, and as low of a profile as I can get. Considering a 240 came stock with like 1.75" exhaust, my space is pretty limited.

I like the bigger pipe for the sound. However running 3.5 or 4 inch in out mufflers really limit your choices. There is a ****-ton of choices in 3 inch. Here's my 4 inch sinch exhaust thread. It may be of interest.

I like this alot, and I never really considered dumping the exhaust underneath the car, but it seems like itd made my life a whole lot easier. Where did you find your collector and muffler?

The flowmaster merge is relatively easy to find. Its a dual 3 inch in with a single 4 inch out. They have different set-ups as well like two 3s into one 3.5 and two 2.5s into one 3 and such. 4 inch in/out mufflers can be harder to find though. They are actually not very common. I had to bite the bullet and pay more for this flowmaster then any other in the past. Merge:
