What is this I here that you actually lose power with 85mm MAF over the stock one?

Most of them alter your tuning because their frequency
per airflow differs from stock (& expected by the PCM)
calibration. Usually, leaner because doing this increases
spark advance and the '98s were tuned fat from the
factory and it helped. But too much of a good thing,
or somebody else's good thing, might not be your
good thing and just make you ping.

If you were tuned up right with the stock MAF, then
most aftermarket ones will take you away from ideal.
Because the increased airflow is less of a bonus than
detuning costs you, you can lose power. At least,
until you tune it in properly (which unfortunately is
not just a turn of the screwdriver, for most).

How would I go about re-tuning the calibration to get the best from the 85mm MAF?

The stock lid is good for 450+rwhp too, but that doesn't mean it can't be improved

An 85mm descreened MAF WILL flow more air than the stocker. If you tune with LS1edit for it so your a/f doesn't get thrown off, you will gain power. If you expect to just bolt it on and go, then you'll probably be disappointed.

...The 85mm SLP unit I bought years ago has a electronic connection (resistor??) that is supposed to adjust the output readings so your car does not run rich with a stock tune....I remember this becuase the salesman asked me about the mods I had at the time and he told me the electronic connection (resistor?) is needed in some applications and not in others..... mine has a screen....

Can anyone confirm this?

Since my car was tuned with Edit with the SLP unit and the electronic connection (resistor?) I assume there is no point in removing it now...

any thoughts?

True but most people wont have it tuned after the install. Thats why it gets a bad rap. Its like anyother Airflow mod. MAF Maf ends and even HPP3 tunning if you are running fat it works great. If you were right on before you get knock.GM tunned these cars pretty well A/F wise from the factory. My 98 responded well to HPP3 tunning. It also loved ported Maf ends but with an A4 i sold them. Most people will tell you they are both a waste of money, But thats not ALWAYS true, just most of the time.

I have been running the SLP 85MM for almost 3 years. I have owned by MAFT for almost 3 years. Via autotap and dyno tuning I have been able to get the max out of the 85MM. I have tried to go back to the stock MAF but I always lose about .2-.3 in the 1/4. IF "tuned" correctly IMO the 85MM is the way to go, even stock set ups - I do have about even bolt out (and soon to be cam'd and headed ). I am going to keep the 85MM and tune it thru LS1edit (via Jason at TSP).
