Steering column help!!

I need to remove the steering column it's in the way of my tsp lt's!! Do I just take the two bolts out and remove it or do I really have to take the whole steering wheel out??

*remove the plastic panel under the driverside dash
*unplug the harnesses
*unbolt the bolts on the firewall
*unbolt the single bolt on the steering linkage
*unbolt the bolts to the bracket right up under the dash

Wow. How come hen I ask this in the actual exhasut thred no one can mention this??
It would hve been helpful to know this first hand. And thanks for the help! Not very discriptive but I guess I'll just start takin stuff apart

what car is this on? you shouldn't have to remove the steering column???

2000 trans am. You have to remove the column. Aparently everyone has a complete different answer.

Can't you just remove the pinch bolt to disconnect the steering shaft from the steering gear box...?

[ i.e. in the engine bay only ]

DO NOT remove the entire column assembly!!! There is a single bolt near the bottom of that shaft where it connects to the rack & pinion and once you remove it, with a little effort, you will disconnect the two and lay the shaft to the side a bit and that'll be all the room you need in regards to the column!
