Default Unhappy with exhaust...ideas?

Just as the title says guys, 98 z, lt headers, offroad Y, magnaflow muffler.
As far as loudness goes, its great, but certain areas of the rpm range are raspy, almost like a straight piped hick truck lol! Not my style. Just would like a nice deep tone. Maybe A dynomax bullet muffler or just a regular flowmaster? Looking for others opinions, don't really care about the dual out, I'm just going to put a dump on it anyways. Thanks guys

Adding a bullet might help the rasp, but not going from the Magnaflow to the bullet. Might try with a better y-merge and see if that helps.

You think the Y is to restrictive? Its a custom 3" stainless piece a buddy built for me, but i know the drivers side has somewhat tight bend before the merge. Don't really want to add a muffler, more like just change it out for something else lol. It sounds great except for certain areas... 2k under load... very retarded sound.

I had terrible rasp at those rpms, went to a high flow catted Y , eliminated it all, sounds great!

Any pics of the Y? A lot of the guys on here complained about rasp and after switching to a better Y that helped out (some)

I have the same prob but mines from about 2k-3k. Lower it sounds great and higher its awesome just right there when I pull out from a light getting on it a little. I'm having a Magnaflow Merge put in either tom or next week. I'll try and report back.

I will get some tomorrow... was just hoping that wasn't it, lot of time invested getting him to make this one. The merge itself is great, but the drivers side before the merge does take damn near a 90 deg. bend.

Post a pic of your ypipe.

Switching to a flowmaster merge was going to be my suggestion. If you are going to dump it I suggest flowmaster 1 chamber. Amazing sound and flows awesome as well.

Or... If you are keeping stock torque arm... tsp x is an option.

Anyone done just a straight 40 series flow with a dump? I had a pair on my old 86 truck and they sounded great, just curious how one on this would sound. I thought maybe it had something to do with the stainless lt's and y

I have one as well...actually an ORY, small dynomax bullet and a 3" in/out flow 10...sounds incredible, only real rasp is around 4500 RPMs...but its hauling *** by then and just sounds mean.

So what about single in/out flow 40 Series?

That merge looks awful... if you can even call it a merge. That may be a source of some of the rasp. Also, are you still on the stock 2 3/4" exhaust piping after the Y-pipe? If so, that's not exactly a free-flowing exhaust. You're going from dual 3" pipes that merge to a single 2 3/4" pipe.

non catback started as a 3" flowmaster system, the muffler just **** out so it got a magnaflow. And i take back my previous statements. After reading on here I see a merge and a Y are deffinetly not the same lol yes mine don't look so hot after all. May have to have him fab a magnaflow merge in there...Just seeing if maybe a muffler would do the trick. Is there really any hp to be made changing the merge?

Yes, there are gains to be had from a nice merge. Nothing huge on a stock internal car but it'll be something. It should clean the sound up a bit, if that's what you're after.

You sound just like me a couple years ago. I had the horrible rasp also and hated it. I threw away more money with different mufflers and combos and was never happy. I finally went with true duals all the way out the back with an x pipe and dynomax bullets. This was the sound I was looking for, no rasp and a mean nasty growl

How much work is it to fit true duals under there? seems a little tight! Both pipes run next to each other I take it? Also are bullets placed after the axle then?

It wasn't bad at all. My pipes tuck up better than my single exhaust ever did. The bullets are just in front of the axle and the tail pipes go under the axle and out the back. I have never had my exhaust drag even with 4 people in the car. Here is how it sounds..

Your merge is one of your problems, as stated that is not a very good merge at all. Check out my first attempt at a y-pipe posted below. You want a good merge collector and as straight of an angle going in as possible. Or goto a x-pipe and TD setup.

I plan on running a 4" flowmaster 1 chamber (delta force one they call it) out the back and a 4" cutout right before the axle.
