Default Opinions on exhaust band clamps

So what's the deal on these things? Never used them, always welded pipe together. It would be nice to remove exhaust when working from the bottom.

I get them from either Jegs or Summit. About $7 or $8 each. They come in either lap type or butt type clamp, but I've even used the butt type on lap connected pipes. And yes, much easier to take apart your exhaust in the future if you need to.

I like mine. I got some with my TSP ORY, and went and bought some at a local parts-plus store because I didn't want to use the regular D-clamps or weld when I'm going to be modifying parts in the future.

I've used them on many vehicles including my truck. Now I'm going to use em on my TransAm when motor gets back into place. They are pretty tough pieces... especially the SS ones.

I used the SS lap clamps on my exhaust and they are holding great so far. I got mine from Summit.

I've used both as well. had somewhat good luck. they tend to develop small leaks over time. Next exhaust I do will be full v-bands. expensive, yes, but they seal great and are very simple to remove and reinstall. no messing with pipes carbond together.

I'm using some lap joint style band clamps from jegs and they work great! Helps me drop my entire exhaust in about 5 minutes and they seal great. Pretty cheap too.

I've had the lap band clamps on my car for 5 years with zero leaks. I tightened mine up with an impact wrench.

I love both styles, the lap and butt joint and I use both. Header to piping I use the ss lap joints then piping to mufflers I use the ss butt joints. This makes for a simple and light exhaust setup. I should also mention I'm one of those that likes to change my exhaust every other month or so, this setup makes it super easy to swap mufflers.

Default No on clamps.

Stay away from band clamps for racing applications, they strech, shrink etc. and are intended to be used one time.
Welded is best.

Good info Guys, I'll give'em a shot. If it doesn't work out for me, oh well. I've spent a lot more money on other things that turned out to be "snake oil".

Smile clamps

The V band clamps work great , have built several full systems with them and they can be removed many times with no issue, if the band goes bad you can get them seperate. And they are cheaper on E-rape, and there are very few made in the states, most are import.
If the flat band clamp wants to slip, you can make a small bead, about 1/3 of the circumference of the pipe and the clamp will bite on that and not slip, hope these things I have tried before works for you also.

I called all around town and finally found one napa parts store that had ss band clamps: total $40, picked up 5 stainless steel rods: total $4. Stronger, only have to mess with it ones, leak proof, etc. It still has clamps to the headers so really only the y pipe itself is welded up and can be taken off easily.
