Default My engine runs "cool"

My 98 ls1 consistently only runs a temp of 180 (or whatever the second line is on the temp gauge), every other ls1 I've encountered runs 210, and mine only does that if I just sit in one spot not moving with the fans off, other than that it's always 180.

It's not really that it concerns me, I just want to know if anyone can explain why it does this?

the factory idiot gauge is highly unrealistic......unless you can verify the coolant temp thru other means ignore it

Actually, the 98 gauge is the only one that's half accurate, so I'm a bit surprised that it's staying the same.

It's always a good idea to get an external electric gauge though. These cars should have came from the factory with full sweep electric oil pressure and coolant temp gauges.

One can dream, right?

I think I'm going to temporarily hook up a temp gauge just to see if it really operates at that temperature.

But no theories? lol

I have a 160* thermostat and the needle rests just above the 160* line. Could the previous owner installed it? Has it always been like this?

It's been this way since I've owned it in July, I bought it with a few bolt on's so I guess the previous probably could've done it.

Lower fan settings, and a 160 stat will do that. But my 98 ran right where yours does all stock. I wouldn't worry about it.

Again, 99 up cars will hover right below 210 because they are just idiot gauges that only show cold, normal and overheating conditions.

I'd say you're just fine. Most guys wished they're cars ran the temps yours did.

Good heat inside means the engine is at operating temperature.
