Default Metallic Core Catalytic Converters?

I have done a bit of searching on the site for info on a pair of high flow cats. I came to the conclusion the 3" Thunderbolt Metallic core Catalytic converters (part #415300) would fit the bill. I found them on ebay for $72 shipped. Ready to go.

I read the ceramic core is prone to breaking up while the metallic core is more durable. Also read the difference between the magnaflow and the thunderbolt is the price.

Then I read in the listing they are not recommended for vehicles manufactured after 1996. Why is that?

Well if it says they are not recommended for 1996 or later, that is because the OBD II system has oxygen sensors after the cats to check for converter efficiency, so these probably won't pass a scan emission test. I would avoid these if passing an emission test is a concern.

The manufacture website makes no statements as far as not using with 1996 or later engines, and they(#415300) are OBD II 49 state legal .

I've heard that aftermarket converters aren't as efficient as the OEM cat, which is why it's so much cheaper. Because of that it will probably throw a check engine light in the future.

^Exactly why a junkyard won't take an aftermarket cat for more than $10.00 but my OEM ones got $40.00

I bought them after a bit of reading. The box specifically says they ARE for OBD II cars. They are sitting on my workbench waiting for me to throw them in. Throwing a code isn't an issue for me, the rear O2 sensors are shut off. I bought the cats to pass a Visual inspection and to get rid of the gas smell at idle.
