$800 for LQ4 a good deal?
$800 for LQ4 a good deal? I have the opportunity to buy an LQ4 that came from a 2001 2500 with 127k miles on it. The current owner disassembled the engine, cleaned and magnafluxed it and says he has all of the parts from the complete engine in boxes, including harness and computer.
I am thinking it is a good deal, but i wanted to get some feedback.
Also the guy said: "the LQ4s have flat top pistons and LQ9s have domed pistons"... so it may actually be an LQ9(im not going to correct him...)

The main reason that I am looking at this engine is that it is within my price range for now and I had already planned to go through any engine that I would purchase (different heads,cam, intake)
I would prefer the short block be completed, but for a complete,albeit disassembled, engine and wiring harness I think this is a good deal( I've been looking for a few months and this is the best deal I've found yet...)

If it feels good to you then do it, but Im like everyone else I dont like to buy someone elses work. If I was you I would go in with a micrometer and whatnot and check the clearances on everything before I purchased an $800 hunk of metal.
FWIW, an LQ9/4 goes for $1k all day by me. I bought my LQ4, tore it down, stuffed LS2 pistons in it, new bearings/ARP rod bolts/rings etc., so if you're just going to go through it anyway, an engine in a box wouldn't be a bad way to save a few bucks (providing it's all there and nothing is hacked up). Just my .02.
Does the owner have a machine shop? How did he magnaflux it? Would he have a problem taking it to a local machine shop to check the specs on the block, crank, and pistons? If it all checked out good then Id say yeah its worth it.

I am planning to take a look at it today(spoke to the guy, but Have not seen it), but can't pick it up till this weekend if I do buy it. When there, I'll see where it was magnafluxed and if he has any receipts/info from a machine shop showing what it is.
Also, I do plan to change cam, heads,&intake so it being torn apart isn't that bad for me

Depending on whats available in your area, it sounds overpriced. Here in phoenix, they come up cheap pretty much daily on craigslist.
I bought a good running 2003 lq4 with 134k on it for $1200 with the complete truck wiring harness, computer, transmission, transfer case, drivelines, and a few other parts. I thought it was a good deal as everything is in excellent shape.
If you do look at it, check out the old bearings and see how they look.
