Default Removing the Harmonic Balancer has to be easier than this

So this weekend I removed all the accessories and such from the front of the motor in preparation for the cam install, I have a 3 jaw puller, which I was using, but doesn't seem to be pulling anything , is there a trick to this? is there a different puller I need? granted my puller isn't the $80 or so ones out there and isn't the ones listed as "GM" puller, but I don't remember having so much problems with my other motors when pulling the balancer.

Any tips? tricks? specific puller?

thanks..

The balancer has three tabs just outside the hub that you grab onto. Not the outer ring that is supported by rubber. I use the old bolt as a base for the puller. Once the balancer hits the bolt I unscrew the bolt some more. This is just about enough to get it all the way off.

^this... ive used a variety of pullers without issue just be sure to grab onto those inner ears, and that the bolt is out enough to where the balancer can actually move

see that's what I thought.. and even though I can continue to tighten and tighten the puller, to me it doesn't seem to be actually pulling.. but ill keep trying..

i used a $24 3 jaw puller from advanced.

a socket that the end of the puller fit into but wide enough so it doesnt go into the hole for the crank bolt.

just went on the crankshaft but most use the old bolt. pulled mine right off.

I tried a 3 jaw puller but they either slipped off or bent. I ended up using a bearing puller from harbor frieght. It's a different design but it works better for pulling than the 3 jaw did.

Chrysler harmonic balancer puller rented from advance auto parts or autozone works like a charm. I use a 1/2in drive shallow socket as big as will fit inside balancer to push on the end of the crank to keep from damaging the threads.

Well I tried again and no luck..as I tighten the puller it would start to lean to a side.. Wouldn't stay centered.. Now this is the cheap harbor freight one..guess I'm going to have to invest in better one.

It's a press fit, with no other fasteners involed. If you're bending the puller, it's frozen on. Make a 50/50 mix of acetone and auto trans fluid - Just about the best rust busting penetrating oil you'll find. Squirt it in there, and let it sit for a while - like a day or two. Then try the above.

If that doesn't work, before you get a puller take a look at the harbor freight bearing puller. It took me all of 4 hours with a 3 jaw and about 5 minutes with the bearing puller.

Are you referring to this puller?

guess im not understanding that puller as I don't see any way for it to grab onto the balancer?
we have the stock one on the car, so there are no bolt holes to secure the puller to, has to be a jaw type..if that makes sense..

I can get you some pictures tonight to show you. But you put the 2 larger silver things from the kit behind the balancer facing out (like a butterfly). Then thread the posts from the kit into the silver things then the bar that looks like an X spans the two posts. Then you thread the large rod that does the pushing through the middle into the center of the balancer bolt.

Intriguing! I've got that set and never thought to try it for a balancer. OP, just remember to use an inverted socket inside the balancer to protect the crank snout as previously mentioned.
