Default LT's and starter question...

I was talking to a guy that owns an F-body at a carshow i was at the other nite...he didnt really seem like he knew too much mechanics wise....b/c his car was completely decked out w/ subs and stereo systems and dvd players and a bunch of other worthless crap when it comes to listening to the engine roar and speeding down the road. But anyways, i was talkin to him about LT's and he said to go w/ shorties or midlenghts b/c he said if i do LT's the heat can effect the starter or something like that. Anyone have any problems after long periods of time? Thanks

Well obviously since he spent all his $$$ on stereo and **** you should listen to him about that kinda stuff..... as far as go fast stuff... he probably doesn't have a clue. A bloody starter in simply a high torque electric motor that doesn't operate when the car is running anyways. I call

I would think the LT's could possibly shorten the life of the starter due to the fact that it gets the hot pipes closer to the starter. Guess it would depend on which header you get and if you do something to insulate it from the starter.

you can insulate the starter. 99 + mustangs have had this issue (atleast two of the ones i've worked on with friends). chances are it won't happen but as a precaution you can wrap the starter in something, be it header wrap or seal n peal or something like that, it will help out some.

didyou tell him he shouldn't have wasted his cash on the shorties and he could have got some neons to go with the other stuff instead? probablywould have got the same amount of HP out of it.

i installed shorties in my lt1 and since the collector was right where the starter was and they were not ceremic coated, my started would over heat. you can buy a start heat shield that wraps around the starter, but i seriously think the long tubes will be better on the starter since the collector is like on the ground and not near the starter and if you get ceramic coated ones you should be fine.

That was a major problem with older cars. They have larger starters than the newer cars like the LS1. Quality headers have more space between them and the starter than older SBC's did.
