Default Cutout Gains or not?

Well this question has bothered me for too long. i dont have a dyno here locally so i cant test it. I want to know if i am making any more power through my cutout rather than my magnaflow muffler. I know the car feels more torquey through the muffler. I know the cutout would make more power if i had a cam or a power adder but i dont. (Mods in sig). Tell me what you guys think? I want to know which way i should be running the car closed through magnaflow muffer only or open cutout? Thanks

they cutout will yield a better gain since its free flowing.....in your setup?? hm... i say probably 5-10RWHP tops..

i get a huge jump when i open mine....but i also run a stock muffler so its a tad different..

you probably see 5-6 hp over your current set up
but the more you mod the more you'll see

I ran some back-back, open/closed higway pulls and
the engine delivered torque showed a pretty solid rise
but only at the top end. Like you'd expect I guess.
I think I posted those a few weeks back.

When I last Dynoed my car I ran one run through the random tech exhaust and pulled 295 RWHP then opened up the cut-out and ran consecutive 323 RWHP pulls. YUP, 28 RWHP going from closed to open!!!! This was with just about everything else on the car stock except the lid and a pulley

Open cutout on my car with Hooker catback gained me 6hp, but I also gained a little more under the curve.

Nope, tried it a few times like that too. The guy dynoing my car said that he gained 25 RWHP going from closed to open, and I was like "BS" until it hapened to me too. I think that a closed cut-out is more restrictive (turbulent) in the I-pipe than the staight pipe that it takes the place of, which means that you lose power when you install a cut-out and keep it closed, but when you open it up WATCH OUT!!! I believe a typical gain of someone going from a cat-back then installing a cut-out and comparing those 2 runs, they will typically gain between 5-10 RWHP.

Seems like most people gain a decent amount. On my previous heads/cam MTI C1, w/ slp 2OTL, I gained nothing.

I have 2 cutouts in my ypipe. I picked up 6 rwhp in the last 400 rpms up top over my hooker catback. Eh...quite disappointing considering how much I spent for the custom Y and dual qtec openers.

I read that the ls1 likes back pressure and that the cutout might now be a good thing for low end torque. Has anyone heard anything about this?

What do you guys think of the exhaust note with the cutout open? We just had a 3" cutout (manual) installed today and to us inside the car it sounds freaking awesome with just a few rough notes...

What is your opinion regarding the sound of the LS1 through a cutout?

I love my cutout open. The sound it makes when the car flies through the shifts due to the converter is awesome! I hate the rattle on the hatch I have at low rpms', but my foot can take care of that! I have the SLP DD, and a smaller cam, so I need the cutout to feel better about my setup

IIRC The torque is not gone it is just moved up in the RPM band. Generally the free flowing of the exhaust is good for power and you will see overall gains on the dyno and on the track. Back pressure can be really overrated by some and is not the engines friend... Now on a 4 cylinder that has no low torque it could be another matter (which always has me scratch my head when I see these Hondas etc. running around with Intake and like 6" exhaust...)
