Default Applying GM BAS eAssist - Belted Alternator Starter to older cars and trucks?

Could this be an easy bolt on 13 hp and 44 foot pounds if torque for our older cars and trucks?

Does anyone know if there are working kits available to retro-fit to an older LS career truck?

Background - BAS is an acronym for belted alternator starter. It is a category of automotive parallel hybrid technology that uses an electric motor to contribute power to the internal combustion engine's crankshaft via a serpentine belt. By mounting this motor generator unit in the conventional location traditionally used for the standard automotive alternator, it permits a low-cost method of adding mild hybrid capabilities.

GM introduced the Gen 3 version in the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra and can improve fuel efficiency by about 13%. This adds about 100 lb (45 kg) to the total weight of the truck but provides an additional 13 hp (10 kW) and 44 lb⋅ft (60 N⋅m)

Never heard of this. Sounds like a gimmick. Wonder how well it “actually” works?

I hope your kidding. Seems like a bunch bullshit to me. Why not get yourself an electric supercharger instead. They can be had for $15-30 on eBay

Not a joke, GM claimed 13 hp & 44 foot pounds of torque with a decent gain in mpg. Its no more ridiculous than electric water pumps or electric steering assist instead of hydraulic power steering or a clutch fan. If it can be adapted easily seems like a possible bolt on for older cars.

Looks like a packaging nightmare and a whole lot of weight to get 13hp. That thing is yuge.

About the same as the gizmo the F1 cars use to gain another 15 to 20 MPH..

Definitely some bulk, I think that whole kit is 100 pounds mostly due to the that big battery pack. If that battery can be used as main battery, one could remove the standard car battery overweight gain would be down to ~55 pounds.

BTW I think the picture is of version 3 unit.

The way to do it would be to stack a bunch of lithium cells for both vehicle battery and to power the thing. You could likely modify and alternator to provide power via a modified stator. Then there is no weight penalty

If you're just looking to use it mostly as another power source it might be best to mount it to the rear end housing with a pulley off the yoke.

That would give more room for mounting, charge once moving and get weight to the back of the car.

Only draw back would be still having to need a starter.

Maybe look into eaton's Hydraulic Launch Assist. Basically uses braking energy to store up hydraulic pressure, and then when you go to move the car, it pushes the car from 0-15 mph. Issue with electrical stuff is you can only get the energy out but so fast. With that hydraulic set up, it will extract the power quickly, but then it's done until the next time you brake.

Never heard of it , blah blah, but I won't knock it until someone else correctly tries it.
Sounds interesting, so does the eaton systems.
If nobody ever tried anything new, we'd all still be walking barefoot in the dirt.
Anxious to hear more real info on some of this new stuff we are unfamiliar with.

So this thing can take the place of our starter? I know of a few people interested in something like this just to get rid of the standard starters.
Wonder about cost. Doesn't look cheap. Reliability of the systems?

I don't see it starting the engine. If you go grab a wrench right now and turn the nut on your alternator pulley the pulley will spin on the belt, but the belt won't turn the motor over, you'll need considerably more belt wrap around that pulley to get it to grab the belt enough to spin over the engine, than we currently have in the OEM configuration. Especially on hot days with the motor hot, unless you can figure out a compression release.

That was a mouth full.

And from what I recall, the hybrid trucks still have a standard starter on them. I think, not 100% sure. Don't see many in the shop but I feel like I saw a starter on one of them.

I agree with you. I don't see that type of thing helping at the track, but I bet it's worth some mpg on daily driving.

LMAO.

I tried to change mine since I felt I've kinda grown out of the guns pointing at the screen thing, but I got too much flack when I removed it.
