Question Quiet Exhaust – is it possible?

Hi,

Was wondering if anyone makes a quiet cat-back system for my 2002 Z28? I’m an old fart and hate the cab resonance at freeway speeds of most exhaust systems! Any ideas? Corsa?

Thanks

Either of the SLP SS upgrade exhausts are pretty
quiet (you might say, annoyingly quiet). Gutted cats
make my CME sound more like a performance car
should. You will sometimes see dual-dual SLP
exhausts selling used. The CME needs some trim
stuff in addition, to look right, so for a car that
had duals originally I'd go with the DD. It's a good
exhaust, there might be some higher flow ones but
not too many that match its flow*quietness I think.

I would also recommend the SLP Dual Dual Catback for what your looking for. It's very mild mannered and tame at idle, part throttle and still at WOT will open up and sound pretty nice. Check out LS1Sounds.com for sound clips!!!

I'll go with the others here and reccommend the SLP Dual Dual exhaust. It's normally pretty quiet.

The hooker catback is very quiet in side the car. Outside is another story. At idle it sounds almost stock, at wot throttle all you can hear inside the car is a slight rumble but outside the car its screaming.

Id recommend either the Hooker, or the slp dual dual. Im not a fan of the sound that magnaflow provides but thats also a good one.

Good luck! oh and catalytic converters will go a long way too.

Like the others said, the SLP dual-dual is a very quiet exhaust.

I'm also an old fart and had the same concern you do, so I went with an electric cutout. I put in the Street Pro Electric Cutout and it works great. I get the best of both worlds, loud when I want it and quiet when I want it.

Plus I made 381 rwhp with the cutout open and only 354 with it closed.

Thanks for the good words "glennhl" --- SSORANGE maybe you should take a look --The Street Pro 3" Street /Strip cutout is not just full opened or full closed --it is made so you can open or close it anywhere between full stops --you control the sound the way you like it for the situation -- and it's built to last -- no leeks -- no rattles --tough as hell --

Hooker is very quiet and flows really well. I had a buddie with no cats and a huge cam with macs and still was somewhat quiet! Good luck

Another vote for the SLP dual/dual, that's what I have on my car. It's just barely louder than stock on my car, if it's any louder at all. Check out www.ls1sounds.com for plenty of clips. I intend to couple it with an electric cutout in the future so I can have the best of both worlds at the flip of a switch.

SLP Dual/Dual with 18" inch bullet here. Very quiet considering I have LTs with ORY, but still has a nice rumble. I have an electric cutout waiting to be installed so I can make it scream when I want.

I used to run the LT ORY Dual Dual setup and it was awesome! Was very tame at idle and part throttle. WOT it really woke up and roared! I added a QTEC to the I pipe and I could be insane loud with the flip of a switch. The only reason I switched to the Corsa muffler was that I had 2 Dual Dual mufflers puke up all the ceramic packing material inside the muffler, which then caused alot of resonation inside the car at freeway speeds. The DD muffler that came with my car gave up at 13K miles and the brand new one I bought off Ebay went 4K miles later. After I installed my TR224 is when the mufflers started crapping out. Has anyone else had this happen? Maybe I just got two bad mufflers. I would still be running that setup if the mufflers did not blow out.

I have longtubes, cats, 18" bullet, and random tech. It's amazingly quiet, like stock but it sounds good. The plan was to just get the bullet to kill the rasp, but it didn't so i got cats put in my ory too.

Thanks for the info!
So are you using a stock catback setup?
How does the cut-out work? Where does it mount?

Thank,

John

It is a small section of exhaust pipe that can be opened manually from under the car or remotely from inside the cabin. When closed, all exhaust gases run through the entire exhaust system. When opened, the cutout vents exhaust gases where it is located increasing airflow and power. Usually located in the I-pipe, right behind the merge.

This is about the most common cutout, you have to manually remove the nuts holding the plate in place: http://www.thunderracing.com/catalog...ories&pcid=101

This is a popular electric cutout, I think they have some demo videos on their site too. Once it's installed, all you have to do is flip a switch from inside the cabin to open/close it: http://www.quicktimeperformance.com/QTEC/
