85mm SLP MAF or port my own?
I have a ported TB, still not 85mm and I don't have an 85mm lid so will it make sense to buy a 85mm MAF? I was thinking porting mine is free and will be the same size as the lid and tb.
If I do go with the SLP MAF, will it effect my LS1edit tune at all? That was another reason I voted for porting my factory one.
Who has a good right up on porting the factory MAF?
Thanks.

IMO don't mess with it, just descreen it that is all. Some folks use ported ends but PCM learns that one out eventually.
Ideally by porting the MAF ends, we should recalibrate the MAF module also.
A descreened MAF can support motors up to 600rwhp..

I have a SLP 85MM and I didn't pick up a speck of mph when I swap for my old home ported TB at the track. I have added a couple of mods {cam and headers} and might need to try it again.
I really think I just threw 140 bucks up in the wind. Get a used one, port it and see what happens. Maybe just buy some used ends and try em out.

If you just want to experiment with some ported MAF ends, we have some cosmetically blemished plastic ported MAFs ends we could sell for 40.00/pair + shipping. That way you do not need to touch your factory MAF and the plastic ends do not heat soak.

LS1-Edit and SLP MAF definately don't like each other. I lost MPH at the track and HP on the dyno when I expirimented with the SLP MAF. Just like a few people have already said, the only thing I did, was remove my screen. Took all of 3 minutes to do!

descreening is one thing...that is unless u let something get by the air filter which will seriously f**k you......porting, buying ported ends, or f**king with it in any other way has proven to cause problems 60-70% of the time. i dont think the power gain is worth the risk of damage that could happen. all i did was descreen mine and take some very fine sandpaper...followed by steel wool....followed by a little polishing compound...just to smooth out the airflow.

I wholeheartedly agree.
If you want to try to land a home-ported one nevertheless, here is a link with excellent pics:

This guy worked on the top and the bottom of the shaft (ie, like on a ported TB) before he installed it for real, and it lookes like there is no screen for protection...FWIW, a screen is supposed to "straighten" the airflow, but does add a restriction on there.
Once you consider that, one option that has proven results is the Z06 85 mm MAF...it was run by GM obviously (and manufactured by Pro-M like the stock unit), so before they put it on there you know that it would work. In other words, it's calibrated for that series of cars, unlike the GMAF and SLP unit. However, it won't work for free you would definately need to get a professional tune, and even then you may need an adapter to mate it to an f-body which you would have to pay extra for.
My 2c good luck have fun.

Oh, I know how to port a MAF. I did one on an old S-10 of mine, and it looked awesome. I took my time on it and polished it all. It worked great. However I had bought some ends and had bad results with my Camaro. I am just trying to figure out my best options now that I have HPTuners. That 85mm MAF is tempting. Is it cheaper to buy a stock one than one of the converted ones?

I've picked up Delphi 85mm MAFs off eBay for $40
and less. Pop the screen, use the Z06 or the 6.0
truck table and you're good to go. I prefer the
fatter truck table myself. You will need to adapt
it up but that's either 5 solder joints and a
junkyard pigtail, or a $30 harness from Casper's.
If you port it, it gets leaner. I ported an SLP MAF
and had to change the resistor value. But I went
to the descreened 85mm Delphi stocker because
it's one less thing to guess about.
