the ceramic is surprisingly tough. Once you riddle it with
holes though it busts up easily.
Some people say gutted cats make rasp. I found there
are several sharp edges where the tube lies inside the
flange that look like they have dog-whistle potential.
I dressed mine smooth with a burr and have no rasp,
just a nice exhaust note (through SLP CME which is a
pretty quiet exhaust). A little boomy at 2-3K which I
think may be the resonance of the cat-shells.
Gutted cats have roughly 1/2 the pressure drop@flow
of stock cats, worse than offroad tubes and better
than the RT high-flow (2.5") big-body cats.
I have looked at putting an inner pipe into them;
this looks difficult due to the bends. But getting a
pair of stainless tubes bent to jig, and MIGing on a
pair of cat-shells and the flanges, would be nice
and not-too-noticeable. Unless they use an IR
camera and know what they're doing.
