It's true, if by chance you were to ever be using Valvoline 10W-30 and also happen to have a Borla cat back with all the plates in place on the car then yes, you can crack your block ...I thought EVERYONE knew this.

Just kidding.

Oil has nothing to do with your busted block. Oil doesn't break things. It's KY for those moving parts...I use Royal Purple's R21 (close to 5W30), but it's over $8 per qt. Mobil1 synthetic is probably the best off-the-self you can get. It's around $4.50. 5W30 seems to be the best all around for these cars depending on your location. There's a reason a lot of us have 'Mobil1 5W30' stamped on our fill caps. It's recommended by the engineers that designed these motors. Use it...

Royal Purple is excellent stuff, but after paying for 6qts of it you feel like kickin the cat around a bit...

I use 5W30 (close to it anyway) right here on the gulf coast. It's just as hot here...

I used to use to 5W30, then switched to 10W30 but will be putting in 0W40 soon (as per the ever knowledgable 'oil guru' Patman's suggestion), all Mobil 1.
If cost were no object I would probably go with Redline or Amsoil.

No, actually I think he meant my new choice (the '40' part of my 0W40), nothing too thick about any of the 5W30 synthetics.

The reasoning behind using a Mobil 1 5W40 or 0W40 is that their weights tend to run a little bit thin (40 is more like a 30) in some cases.

By far my favorite oil for the LS1 is the German made Castrol Syntec 0w30. I just posted the best oil analysis report yet for an LS1 when I used this oil in it. Very impressive stuff!

You can find it around. Different chains carry it.

Thats off Castrol's website. You give them the town and zip, and they give you the closest retailer.

I use Castrol GTX 5w-30. Been using it since my Rx7 days and it runs great. Nothing beats synthetics, but I change mine ~2.5K, so running synth is a little pricey for me.

I switched from M1 10W-30 to 0W-40 and my oil consumption has went away (not that I was using a lot) I think one reason "the engineer" at GM say to use 5W30 is because it may get you a little better gas mileage. From what I've read, the M1 10W-30 offers a little better wear protection than the 5W30, and is a thin 10W30 anyways.
