Default What bolt ons are a total waste of money?

I'm debating on swaping my thermostat, plugs and wires. Would this be a total waste of money on a lightly moded car? I have a 01 TransAm if it matters.

Thanks!

Adam

I prefer a fan switch or altered fan activation temps to a lower thermostat. Maybe a 180*...
None of those three are really considered bolt-ons because they don't do anything to make the car more powerfull/faster. Most bolt-ons are worth the money when you look at the hp/$. Lid, LS6 intake, pulley, ported TB, exhaust, cold air induction.....

Those are worthwhile replacements for factory pieces if you notice they indeed require replacement. Most bolt ons are only bolt ons if they help engine airflow to work as a dynamic breathing system. Good wires and plug will conduct electricity more efficiently which would lead to more hp if the existing wires are not buring correctly.

Good point. Do not buy the smooth bellows that SLP, or anyone else, for that matter, sells. Do the "fernco" or "hump hose" mod. I got the hump hose. Can't beat $15, even if it only adds 0.5 hp.

I include that as well. I bought one of those $15 EBAY bellows, looked at it, and thought WTF did I buy this for? You go from several small ridges, to one huge rib. There isnt going to be any sort of power increase there. Save that money for something useful, like spark plugs.

My top 3 list for a total waste of money might look something like this:

1-The new MSD coil packs at $74.88 a piece($599.04)+tax and shipping.
2-Brand new shorty headers.
3-High horsepower stickers.

Thanks for all of the responses guys. I'm looking at buying a springs/cam/bolt-ons package and they include the thermostat, plugs and wires into the package and I'm trying to cut some cost out if I can so I can afford it. I'll have a converter and suspension going in at the same time, so needless to say things are adding up quick and I'm trying to trim the fat where I can.

Thanks again!

That may not do anything, but it's a "free mod" not a bolt-on.

-$400+ tb's ..... just port it youself.
-over weight holley/bbk intakes! just get an LS6.
-heavy duty g-load brace! many just take theres off... (but get SFC!!!)

Don't buy an aftermarket MAF sensor like Granatelli's. Total waste of money. Leave the stock MAF in unless it goes bad, then replace it with a Z06 unit.

I would also say the tb bypass would not fit under the criteria of a total waste mod. It's a "free" mod, and one of the cheaper ones too. It only cost me $4 and can only help. It was cheaper than other "free" mods like the egr mod that cost me $13 for a gasket.

i took my cats off and i saw a good improvement. Have done most of the free mods and seen my car run a little stronger not really like "seat of the pants" feel but on the upper end.--Andrew
