Default LS1 MSD coil goodness

First off, if all you are going to do is tell me what a waste of money these are because guys are running 9s with the stock coils... bla bla, don't bother to respond. I have already heard from all of you and will be ignoring you. Stock LS1 GM ecoils are good, but who says MSD can't make a better one? I had the money, to blow, so I will try them..

I got them in today and installed today. The install is pretty straight forward, take the old coils out, bolt the new coils in. They are a direct bolt in. They are physically quite a bit bigger than the stock ones, which you don't notice until you put them side by side.

How did they install you ask? Well, the left side coils were in after about 10 minutes. Since they are a little thicker around the middel, they were hitting the fuel feed line to the rail. Some ever so gentle persuasion in the upwards direction solved this.

Enter the right side.. Getting the stock coils out was easy, and getting the MSDs in wasn't too bad. I have valve cover shims to clear my roller rockers, so everything sits a little higher anyway, then you try to stuff a fatter coil in there past the heater coil hose, and you run into a bit of a headache.

I spent better than 1 hour trying to get this hose jockeyed to a position where it wasn't going to self destruct on the coil and finally came up with a compromise for now.. Will have to yank it back out over the winter and replace this heater core hose with a longer one that I can route to a better position.

Driving impressions? Don't expect any SOTP performance figures, I don't and never will believe in that sort of thing. I give that as much creedance as I do a G-tech..

What I can tell you is that it fires right up and some of my cam lope seems to be gone Or maybe that's all in my head..

What most certainly is not in my head, is the highway 6th gear vibration that made it impossible to make out what was following me in the rear view mirror, that I thought was drivetrain, is now completely gone. As is the lower rpm, high load roughness and the vibration past 6000 rpm that I was getting before. The car is totally smooth now, like it was before I installed the Polyurethane trans mount! That was a side effect I was not expecting.

High load, heavy part throttle is also smooth and free of the slight surges I was getting before.

WOT? Will have to wait for this weekend to get drag strip figures, but it seems go get through 4th faster. Take that for what it is worth, no predictions.. and.. no.. I don't think I should REALLY feel a 10 or 20 hp gain if it is that much

This does not seem to have been a waste of money so far, (I know, I know, $75.00 each for 8 coils), But so far it is worth it to me to get a smoother running engine.

Anyway, I will post pics for interested parties, I can tell you they liven things under the hood a bit. I will also post performance increase or drop after this weekend's trip to the strip..

cya!

looking at your mods... you DEFINETLY are not the type to go the "cheap route" ....thanks for the info...... so you say your going to the track soon: will the coils be the ONLY new mod since the last time you went to the track?

Would it be alright to replace just the ones that go bad? Lets say the coil on cylinder 4 is bad, can you just replace that one with a MSD? It seems a bit excessive to spend $600 to get all new ones.

i wouldnt waste the money for just one, if you did them all its fine but since they advertise better spark then i would just stick with a stock one.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Yes, I believe they will, I'm not expecting the driveshaft to be here until next week. Besides, if they do help, I would like to be able to jump on here and tell everyone exactly how much, since I believe I'm probably one of the first to try them.

I'm not a believer in trying to go cheap on a car that I demand so much out of. I also like to get all the little supporting mods on to help out the more expensive stuff.

I need to stop spending money on the motor and start spending more on the suspension and tires.

Replacing just one would probably make your motor run just as bad as having one bad coil. If it does improve combustion, you will have one good running cylinder and 7 mediocre ones. This will throw your motor a little out of balance.

This mod should definitely be a full replacement.

I haven't tried the MSD coils, but from your experience I'd like to give them a shot. Bob

I never really thought that it was a bad mod or a waste of money, but its just other things out there that will give better gains, for the same amount. Id like to try these, but at 75 bux a pop id rather do a cam.
