Default What is safe to remove (emissions, etc.)

Hey all,

I'm in the process of swapping an '01-'02 LS1/T56 into my '68 Chevy stepside (out of WS6). Thread link showing progress: https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversions-swaps/370781-my-ls1-t56-swap-into-68-chevy-c-10-stepside.html

I've got the engine in and I'm about to start on the hydraulic clutch and accellerator, etc. I'm sending my harness of for hacking this week (if all goes well) and my PCM for reprogramming. I need to start pruning any unnecessary stuff primarily off the intake.

For my setup, I'm not using stock headers, so I removed this guy. Based on help from others, I've been told that's OK.

I'd like to know what else is OK to remove as far as the things that go into the back of the manifold. I don't know what the names of every single thing is, so I'd really appreciate it if somoene could like ... look at these pictures and maybe draw on them to show me? I know it's asking a lot, but I'd like to understand what the names of the hoses, sensors are and whether it's safe to remove them (e.g. what the repercussions will be).

Here is a list of pictures showing the tubes and sensors in question - some are dupes, there are closeups in the bunch. If you want to edit/markup the pics, right-click the link and "save as". If you can't post them to a site, email them back to me and I will repost them in this thread so others can learn from this thread also:

I plan on buying blockoffs for the back of the intake, I am purchasing through someone here at the forum that makes them. I just don't know which ones I need to get .

Sorry for being such a noob.

Photo 1 = AIR solenoid

Photo 7 = AIR on the right, Purge on the left (fuel tank vapour vent)

Other than that you've taken photo's of the PCV hoses which you'll either need to keep as they are, or set something else up to maintain a vacuem in the block.

Sorry, forgot to say remove what you can get away with legally!

What are all the small (2mm?) vacuum hoses all over the intake? I notice a lot of them are either cut or missing.

Can anyone recommend a good book to help me understand this engine and how to mod the intake while keeping it street legal?

Since its going into a '68 I don't think it has to be emmissions legal which is what I think you're getting at by ''street legal". I know that a lot of states have rules where vehicles made before a certain year are exempt from emmissions and all that stuff. I'd say leave the PCV and vacuum hoses alone and just take off the AIR system. There's no point in finding a spot to mount that on your '68. All it does is clutter up your engine bay, weigh your truck down and make annoying noises.

PCV is required for all domestic passenger cars from 1965 on.

They can all be ditched, just remember to block up the holes into the manifold!

Anyone got a good book or website recommendation (preferrably with pictures) to help me understand the emissions, intake and exhaust components and sensors for the '01-'02 LS1? I still feel a little unclear what is safe to add and remove without hurting the performance and/or life of the engine.

Can someone tell me what the sensor is between the 3rd and 4th injector in this picture (with the two vacuum lines coming out)?

ttt

Would also be nice to know what the two diff't vacuum hoses do. I think one is maybe vacuum sensor for intake? Can't tell. Hoses were butchered when I bought this guy for my truck.

That sensor is part of the AIR system.

Thats all part of the PCV system, you need to keep that, it draws from both sides.

http://satellitehead.com/uploads/ls1-7.jpg

The thing on the left in this picture is for the evap system, allows tank vapors to escape, dont worry about it. You can remove it and plug the manifold.

The part on the right needs to go byebye too, along with that useless bracket thats bolted onto the coil pack rail right beside it. It used to hold onto that thing in the first picture you posted.

http://satellitehead.com/uploads/ls1-3.jpg

The 1/8" vacuum hose coming in from the right in this picture, and plugging into the thing in the middle operates the door for the A/C system. I'm 90% sure on this, maby someone else can chime in too.

On the left side of this pic, there is a sensor screwing down into the block with a white clip on the top. This is the oil pessure sending unit.

Lots of guys use aftermarket ones that they hook up to an aftermarket traditional oil pressure guage.

Sweet, thanks guys, maybe I won't be needing to buy the FSM after all! I have had several people recommend the FSM, just haven't broken down and found a place to buy the damned thing for less than $100
