Default MAF free horsepower?

Is it true you can free up a little hp by removing the screen of the maf . If so how much and what are the procedures for doing so . Also what are the setbacks and is it worth it ?

Unless you are making 500+ hp leave it alone, the stock one flows just fine. Not worth it IMHO.

Don't bother. Especially if you have an A4.

Drawbacks are loss of the bug & chunk filtering, and
-potentially- a loss of airflow metering fidelity, which
depends a lot on the geometry of your intake tract.

The stock screened MAF presents a restriction on the
order of the stock lid, even at lower airflows (per my
shop vac measurements); as airflow goes up this is
going to worsen as the little channels go internally
turbulent. On a pressure-drop basis this argues for
descreening. However a lid has no downsides to it.

Until you are prepared to retune for the errors you
create, best to not create it. The performance may
not materialize, or more substantial downsides can
accrue (like from reduced A4 line pressure if the
error is bad).

Have an "exit strategy".

I did mine and ....... regret it. my car bucks and surges afterwards. Got a new SLP one and that all stopped.

I descreened mine and didnt notice anything good or bad, so I just put it in the "every little bit counts" category along with my smooth bellow and tb bypass.

I did mine and have noticed nothing either way. I put it in the every little bit counts section as well but at the same time I feel like I failed to weigh the possible advantages (better flow) Vs. possible disadvantages (something somehow getting by the filter and getting in my engine.) Something to keep in mind.

I would say not to do it. It offers little or no gain at the expense of possible driveability issues, and crap getting into your motor. I run a paper filter in my lid, but still find bugs and stuff in my MAF screen. If I was to descreen my MAF, the bugs and stuff would be swollowed up by my motor.
