Default Kooks installers come in.

I got some Kooks LT's to install. I've seen write ups for other headers but none on Kook's. Any other things that need to be removed to install 'em. Filter, alternator, steering shaft, spark plugs, dipstick. Just looking for whatever info I can get to make the install a breeze. Thanks for the info.

Coil packs, Dipstick, Steering shaft, Oil filter

I left the plugs in, and No you dont have to touch the alternator...

The drivers side has to go Straight up, make sure your car is off the ground far enough

Oh, and save yourself TONS of hassle and get a set of metric Gear Wrenches. You'll thank me when getting to all the header bolts..

I just did them yesterday. Heres what I found out. (side note)- 2002 z28 6 speed- ditched the AIR injection already of course no EGR. Started by removing the old manifolds and y pipe. Took all 8 plugs out. Took both coil pack brackets off (belive me it gives you just a extra bit of room). passanger side i removed the dip stick it comes out easy with a 15mm holding it on the head.

So all the plugs are out exhaust manifolds are off coil packs are off and the dip stick tube is out.

Disconnect the battery you never know where wrenches might go or bolts.

The passanger side i put right up from the bottom nothing else needed to be removed.

Then remvoe the oil filter(DO NOT REUSE THE OLD FILTER).

Dissconnet the tranny mount. i took the whole trans mount down and off the car. This gives you extra "twist" when jacking the motor.

I then removed the alternator leaving it in its place but removeing all the bolts so i could get the motor mount bolt out.

Take out the motor mount bolt now on the driver side. Use a jack(with a peice of wood on it) to help ease the bolt out and silicone is also your firend here.
Once you get that out remove the steering shaft there are 2 7/16 bolts that hold it in.

Also Take the WHOLE motor mount bracket if you would like to call it out. It is bolted to the subframe. They are 4 15mm bolts.

After those were out the header went right in from the bottom.

So quick list

-stock manifolds
-stock y pipe
-coil packs
-plugs
-dip stick
-steering shaft
-motor mount
-oil filter
-Trans mount

Hope this helps If i would of disconnect the trans mount ALL THE WAY not just the center bolt i woulda been less stressed at the end. Then i finally relized i need more twist on the motor and that was what was holding it up.

Kyle

Umm.. You dont need to touch the motor mounts...

I have 1-7/8" kooks and if you have your car jacked up high enough you can slide them in from the bottom.. as long as the steering shaft is out..

And when i mean high enough.. you may have to get creative.. I had to use a large block of wood on my jack (my jack and jack stands weren't tall enough alone).. Get inventive but BE SAFE!!!!!

Getting the car high enough won't be a problem. I'll have a lift. Is the steering shaft really necessary? These are 1 3/4" headers. I thought these went in piece o' cake? Shouldn't be too bad, I'm swapping manifolds, plugs, and wires all at the same time too. I should be good. Any more advice is appreciated.

BTW, is the steering shaft disconnected under the dash? Or at the U joint?

You can get to both bolts for the steering shaft under the hood...

Well, one you might have to go under the car to reach better but you get the idea.

Oh, and DONT turn the shaft during disasemmbly or after.

I installed my Kooks LT's about a month ago. Only things I had to remove were the obvious things (plugs, wires, and dipstick), then the oil filter, and oil drain plug. With just those things removed, the headers slid right in.

I installed the Kooks 1 3/4 headers on my car and I didn't have to take off anything extra to put the headers on.

I DIDN'T have to take off the coil packs, steering shaft, oil filter, spark plugs, or alternator. I also didn't loosen the motor mounts or tranny mount.

I did take off the plug wires and dipstick.

The passenger side slid right in and the driver's side slid in after I found the right angle.

Mmmm, I've installed many sets of Kooks, and from underneath you shouldn't have to remove or move anything that isn't already out to remove the stock manifolds...

Were you using a lift or jack & stands? Getting ready to do this myself soon, too.

No need to loosen motor mount bolts, remove alternator, steering shaft, oil filter, etc.

For ease, we remove the coil packs to remove the plugs/wires (Usually changing the plugs when doing a header install and easier to get headers in w/o worrying about breaking plugs). Remove the dipstick. Remove the stock exh/cats/y-pipe. Both side headers go right into place. The driver's side hold vertically (#1 cylinder tube towards the sky) and it slides right in. We have done these installs on jack stands and lifts, not a problem usually 3-4 hours with our y-pipe modifications.

On a lift 2 hours...

Unbolted coilpacks folded the over and removed sparkplugs and dipstick.

Its pretty straight forward.
