Default Please help the exhaust dummy (me)

So my engine is pretty much stock, mac mid length headers, mac ory, and factory exhaust. It's time to get a better free flowing exhaust system. The problem, I don't want to hear the exhaust on my daily driver. My friends have always ragged on me for buying my bird instead of a vette, then trying to turn it into a mecedez. Basically over the years of having my bird I have gone through great pains to get my interior quiet, & completely rattle free. I would hate the prospect of countering my work by installing a loud resonating exhaust. From searching threads I'm quickly realizing I'm kind of screwed, but. . . What options do I have here. Is it possible to have a high flow system w/o the extra noise? Do those cone inserts that supposedly quiet things down w/o hampering flow really work? Should I just quit my crying, get a corsa system and be happy?

It's a muscle car-it's supposed to have rattles and shakes! Embrace them and add a bigger cam to amplify the effect!

If you want good flowing and quiet, look at the SLP dual-dual exhaust. It's probably the most docile sounding free flowing catback made. Do a quick search on it and you'll find lots of info......even with search only going back to '06.

The magnaflow and hooker are pretty mellow on bolton cars. You could also look in to puttin cats back in to help with the resonating, or may be a bullet in the I pipe.

+ 1 I just couldn't own a muslce car and not hear the music of that 8 cylindered instrument under the hood.

Having said that, noise supression means less flow, sadly you can't have the best of both worlds, else all race cars would be silent.

My V12 XJS was whisper quiet, but by just replacing the exhaust (didn't have CATS) from the down pipes back and retainig the stock headers there was 20-25bhp due to the stock item being so restrictive.

The stock LS1 muffler probably isn't all that bad. Maybe an aftermarket muffler built to similar levels as the stock one is what your needing, might be worth speaking with someone like Magnaflow they may be able to set you up with a direct replcement muffler that will flow better but be quieter than their regular catback.

i had a hooker cat back and it was quiet. several of my friends have magnaflow cat backs and they are relatively quiet. just get you a set of high flow cats and a cat back set up. you'll be happy. generally (not ALL the time) the bigger the muffler, the quieter it will be

Jhonny C, I've had that same thought cross my mind a ferw times, But I'm reserving that for my 68 firebird build up.

Jimmy & Conan, I'll probably call up those guys and talk with them. Although, I was under the impression from searching the forum that corsa was the most quiet. At cruising speeds anyhow.

300bhp, That's a pretty impressive gain.

So anyone here have any knowledge about those cone inserts?

My question is how come you didnt just get a Mercedez?

The cone insert will restrict you a bit as well as quiet your system down to a certain extent. Honestly I have no good way of quieting down my systems, because they have always been loud and obnoxiuos on purpose.

What about an electric cut out, that way you control the noise level, normal everyday driving, leave it closed, but if you want the noise, or need the freer flowing exhaust, just open it up

Lol, I wouldnt bother with a cutout if you want a quiet interior. I used to be the same way, and then I must have hit my head and decided that nothing was too loud. But it is up to you man. Your car, your rules....

Well it sounds like quiet isn't going to happen for me. But I'm sure the extra hp gained will make things easier on me. As long as don't get that drone on the highway at cruise, I'll be fine with it. Thanks for the responses guys!

I am on the side of a cut out i live in an area where my loud *** exhaust would not be welcomed so cut outs are a good option dump them at the track or when i need to go fast and then quiet when i need to get in the garage at 12am after racing all night.

In case you didn't see the 5000 other posts about this-

Hooker = good sound, flow, fitup, price, and no rasp or drone.

You aren't going to find a catback exhaust that is as quiet as the factory system. Even my SLP dual/dual system is pretty throaty with the off-road pipes in place vs. the cats, and the Magnaflow and Hooker systems are even louder. My recommendation to you so you can have the best of both worlds, is to keep the stock system and install an electric cutout. This will also be a fun way to screw with your Mercedes buddies.
