Try different air filters. Holly air fillters have a thicker seal than K&N. I have a MTI lid. I was told by MTI that if I use a Holly air filter on my air box. I have a chance of breaking the tabs on my air lid. I also bought a Fram Filter. The seal was way too thick. I couldn't even get the lid on.

Ethier the filter or the lid is not install correctly (which is VERY common).

http://www.installuniversity.com/ Look for Whisper lid install.

I just installed my MTI clearlid and it took me a few minutes to get those tabs in place..at first I couldn't even get the thing to fit period cuz the air filter stuck up too high..after taking out that bottom tray under the filter(don't know if i was supposed to or not but i did and it worked..directions didn't say anything about it) it was fine minus the tabs that i stated earlier <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

Make sure the front lip of the airlid is inside the bottom part. Then it should close perfectly. I first put on mine on and had it outside of the bottom piece and it kept unsnapping, maybe that's what happend to your friend?

It will be a little snug to fit the lid on at first, but take your time and just work it on. The plastic will then stretch and fit better over time. It helps to get a better seal on the air lid. Mine fits perfectly now and was tight at first, but not all that hard to put on.
