Stock GM y-pipe vs SLP y-pipe?
"There is a difference between your stock y-pipe and the SLP y-pipe. One of the SLP sales reps told me to do this. Go under the driver side door and look under your car and you'll see the stock y-pipe. You can easily see that the pipe gets flat at one point. This sucks when you're looking for more power. The SLP y-pipe is a bigger pipe than the stock and isn't flat anywhere. It doesn't restrict like the stock one".
Would like some more opinions from the above.
I'm thinking about an aftermarket exhaust and wondered if switching out the Y-pipe would give me a deeper tone and more HP?

It will give you a deeper tone. I have one but did not dyno for gains, etc. I don't know if it helps or not but I like the look of it alot better than that squished job. Imagine taking it to the extreme, and flattening that stock y-pipe section out until it's nearly completely flat/squished. It would be wider, but would it flow the same? No...of course not....

If you cut a piece of rope and and connect the two ends, then a complete circle will maximize the area within the plane inside the rope.
Though, this is probably already taken into account and compensated in the stocker and other applications using the method.
That said, I have an unused SLP y for 98-99 that I never bothered to install for the reasons stated before. I let it go cheap for $110+ shipping if anyone is interested.

I installed mine the same time as my cutout and free mods. I definitely wouldn't have paid 200 for it, good thing I got a good price.

It's so nice to hear some intelligence on the Y-pipe issue for a change. I've been in many a disagreement over that topic. I think it may have been flattened for ground clearance from the factory. I have known some guys that install those pricey after markey Y pipes nad are constantly hittig things on the ever varying roads. I have thought of doing one thing though, just for the hell of it. I was thinking of going to www.drgas.com and getting some of those rectangular pieces that they sell and make my own damn pipe that has the same ground clearance as the stock but flows better and is possibly lighter.

I agree, the SLP pipe is not worth $200. If you were getting a complete, 2-1/2" ORY for the same price (MAC) it would be worth it because you are also losing the restriction of the cats (if you can go without).
BTW - A round pipe that has been flattened does indeed flow less than the same round pipe that has not been flattened for two reasons. The crossectional area of the round pipe is greater (a circle is the most area-efficient shape) and less of the flow (percentage-wise) is slowed by boundry-layer friction.

Actually, it would. When you flatten a pipe it still retains its internal dimensions.
Ever seen the exhaust on a Nascar? They use stuff like 2x4" piping at the MOST. The main (intermediate) piping is only like 1.5" tall, but 5" wide or so (just using estimates here). Do a seach on google and you'll see what I mean. Think they have any exhaust restriction problems?
The y-pipe will give a bit of a cleaner tone, I agree. Think the sound waves don't get so distorted from the flattened pipe or something. But zero gains overall. I didn't even gain .1mph or anything. For $200, there are plenty more things you can do. I spent 35$ on a cutout and gained 100x more sound and 1mph in the 1/4, for example. A good waxing would probably give better gains than the slp y-pipe. At least I only paid 150$ for mine, even if I cut it up and threw it in the trash a few weeks back (I have FLPs now).
