Default Does removing the air filter give you any mph at the track?

I heard of a few guys removing their air filter at the track and was wondered if it helps the mph or the ET. Just wondering.

Thanks, Bill

I tried it for the first time last week (no MAF screen, I really shouldn't have risked it) and saw no gains at all.

I did it one time back when I was stock and still had the MAF screen ... first, no gains - second, there was all kinds of debris stuck in the MAF screen, seeds, grains of sand and what not.

Not a good idea on our cars.

If you run a track in the middle of a corn field (like these other guys ), then no. But if you run in a respectable track, where dirt doesn't blow accross the track (like big NHRA tracks) then yes, you will pick up 1 mph and .1 in ET. This has been proven here in So-Cal by alot of different cars running in different tracks. But only if you have some sort of ram air setup, on a non-ram air'ed setup you won't see much of a difference. I personally have experienced the same. Try it and find out, don't go by what you read on message boards. Always inspect the intake track after each pass though, to be sure you are not gathering up debris.

there is a dirt circle track about 50 feet from the stands at Heartland Park Topeka (a major sumer national NHRA track!) LOL - i really would not take out the filter. it is not much of a restriction

For my 422ci iron, running w/o an air filter has typically given me a 1mph gain on the big end. This was in back to back testing, .5 to .6 gain at the 1/8th and a full mph up top.

Next time I will prolly do the Raugh panty hose mod.

No, a few people have done it with no improvements. They also dyno the same or lower without an air filter vs a regular filter.

Even if you could pick a mph or so I would not run the risk of debris going into the engine.

I'm pretty stock, see sig. When I take it out I consistantly see between .5 to 1mph in the 1/4. Thats the truth, I run a K&N and the only reason I can see to buy it[if I could go back], would be because I have removed the baffles from my hood and sealed the hood to the air box. When it rains hard the filter gets wet and I think the oiled filter does better than paper when wet. If you got to get a oiled filter, get the Holley. Not too impressed with K&N. But who knows, might pick up the same if I were running a paper filter or the Holley.
