Default Remove MAS Screen?

I am wondering about the benefits of removing the MAS screen. First off, why the hell is it there, and second, will I gain anything by removing it? The car is new, and I am not going too hog wild with it since I still might have to bring it back for warranty stuff. It appears I cannot get it out without destroying it. I have considered getting new ends without the screen and swap the stock one back on if it has to go into the dealer, but again, is the improvement in performance worth it?
BTW: I removed the screen on my 94 Trans Sport (it was held in with a c clip and came right out with no damage) and really have not noticed a difference at all. Than again, it is a minivan.

Thanks!

Mike

First off, what year is your car? The 98-00 models have a MAF screen. The '01-'02 models don't. Actually, a few '01's do have them.

Anyway, it's there to straighten out air flow. IMO it does nothing but restrict air flow. I gained 19rwhp just by removing the screen. My car was running extremely rich and this leaned it up nicely. I'd remove it if I were you, but you should have atap or ls1edit if you want to do it properly.

As mentioned, my 01 has a screen. I have a scanner but am not sure which parameters to monitor before and after de-screening. If I am running rich now - what are the odds of needing a translator after the mod ?

I just talked with a buddy of mine. His '02 Ws6 has a screen too...weird. Anyway, I really have no idea if you'll need a MAFT after the mod. Sorry. That's about all the info I can offer.

My WS-6 is a new 2002, built in May '02. It DOES have a screen, trust me. I have looked at a few other '02s at the dealer today, and they have them too.

Why would this need be hooked up to the scanner? Would the computer adjust for it in time? It would only seem to allow for air to enter quicker since it does add a little restriction. I removed the screen on my minivan without doing anything else. Even though I have not really noticed a difference in power, my gas mileage did improve by 1.

Again, is there a way to remove it without destroying it?

Thanks again!

Mike

My 02 has a MAF screen to... and I'm leaving it in cause when I put on my DF lid I found a blade of grass pressed up against the MAF screen.

As it sits a stock MAF is good for 600 hp
So if the urge to jack with it comes along...... ask yourself I`m I close to 600 yet ?
You want issues ? start jacking with the MAF and get ready to reach for your wallet to pay for the correction need to actually gain that .2/1mph or whatever is claimed ........?

I just stated what happened in my case. I did this mod on back to back dyno runs.
The guy who did it for me just happens to own a motorsports company and he's a professional driver (7.7x sec 1/4 Mustang). I think he knows what he's doing. I could really give two ***** what you think. I was standing right there while it occured.

I have removed my screen on my 00' Z but was reluctant to do so for the fact that the screen regulates the air flow for the MAF sensor. By removing the screen it would seem that the sensor would have a hard time recognizing the proper air reading to the computer. I have heard of some cars losing power b/c the computer doesnt know how much fuel it should be putting. Just thought I would add some things I have heard around the site.

I have heard that people have lost hp as well. Same thing goes for ported MAF ends.

All ls1 F-Body’s have a screened MAF.

Taking out the screen makes your MAF less reliable. The screen is a flow strainer. The screen smoothes out the air flow making the air inside the MAF consistent. De-screening your MAF makes the air flow kinda jumpy. Some of the air will get through the MAF, without being detected by the MAF sensors. This is what causes the A/F to change.

The HP gain that most people get is from the A/F ratio being leaner. Not because they have more air going through.

It's better just to change the A/F ratio, and not screw with the MAF.

I like my A/F ratio's in the 12's. When I had a stock car. The de-screened MAF was OK. The more I modified the car. The more problems I had. My MAF started to through lean codes. Because it wasn't consistent.

!!!Ohhh Yea!!!! The dealership will not be happy if they find out you don't have a screen. Most of the time they won't notice.

When my car was stock the first thing I did was take out the MAF screen. After I got my air lid, I started throwing codes. I took my car into a dealership and had all stock parts except my de-screened MAF. It turns out I was throwing lean codes. The dealership said I needed a new MAF. <At this point I don't think they realized I had taken out the screen.> The dealership decided to replace the MAF under warranty. When I went to pick up the car, they said parts were missing from the old MAF. My dumb *** mentioned something about the screen and the guy instantly knew I did it. He wasn't happy. He started saying I coast them over $500 and I'm lucky they don't make me pay for it. If the dealership would have noticed there is no way they would have replaced the MAF.

i think that all of the rumors of a descreened stock MAF was on the ZO6 optioned corvette. i could be wrong though. as for your question, yes you will have to distroy the screen to get it out and probably nerver get back in again. at least this is how i did mine. as for performance gains, some will say that it gave thier cars more power and some will say that i caused it to lose some power. it seems that some cars will responde to some mods better that other cars.

I'm with BAD02WS6. Don't touch it and especially if it is an A4!

I don't have the $$$ to buy hit-or-miss mods. The whole maf thing seems hit-or-miss to me. I.E. descreening the stock one, it throws a code and having to buy a new stock one or buying a ls6 or gms and waste $$$ on that.

I think I'll just leave the damn thing alone.

For now.

I have an '00 Z28 A4, I've taken out my MAF screen and threw no codes, no idle problems, atap was perfect and the car ran a 12.8@108.43 with only a lid, thermostat (with Hypertech for fan and shift settings only), free ram air and on street tires so I have no regrets having removed it.
