Default Guys with exhaust dumping underneathe your car. . .Quest.

Those of you with mufflers after they Y-pipe, or X pipe setups that dump underneathe the car, how much louder is it inside?

I have LT's, big OR pipe, and a 3" mandrel bent setup with a straight through 3" round ultra flow muffler.

But I want to quiet it down & eliminate some tubing, so I was gonna put a regular oval Ultra Flow muffler (pn# 17229) right on the outlet of the y-pipe, and have a turndown befoer the axle.

I'm 99% sure it'll be quieter (outside of the car) than my current setup, but will it be LOUDER on the inside?

Thanks
Mike

my current muffler is pn 17223. . .basically 3" inlet/outlet, but the inside is ~3.5" diameter. . . MUCH less restrictive, and I assume louder than 17229.

If you turn the dumps to the sides instead of pointing toward the ground you will have a lot less resonance inside the car.

Shane I want to hear the car with the new exhaust!

I run an open y-pipe with no muffler and it is very loud inside the car, or so people tell me. I am used to it and think it is to quiet.

Well, thanks for the replies, at least a couple of them were useful.

Anyways, I still think the oval muffler with side in/opposite side out will be quieter than the round welded 3" muffler.

I'm trying to quiet it down a little for my neighbors actually since I leave my house @ ~5:45 in the morning, and when I initially fire it up, it sounds like a fire-breathing dragon sneezing.

I gotta find a local guy with a muffler laying around for me to experiment with!

I was told that if you angle your dumps slightly toward each other rather than straight down or outward, it quiets the exhaust quite a bit. Of course it was a Mustang guy that did this so you never know...

I have the tips on my duals pointed in towards each other, this does cancel out the sound a bit. Saw that in a Hot Rod mag, & it worked. Every little bit counts.

Still got cutous, for when the neighbors **** me off

I have Hooker Super Comps with DynoMax Bullets and dumps....I would tell you how loud it is when I romp on it. But, I have to stop the bleeding coming from my ears. Everyone says it sounds sooooooo cooool. After a short drive, I couldnt hear them compliment my car anyway.

I seriously doubt you will be able to fit the oval muffler right off the Y junction without killing your ground clearance.

Mike, right now your exhaust goes all the way to the back bumper?

If you dump it before the axle it will be louder than that. Exhaust will hit the ground and there will be more resonance.

you all that said you pointed your turndowns to the sides, are they directly horizontal, or at an angle down from horizantal? i pointed mine at 45 deg from horizantal, i have a significant amount of resonance between 2400 and 2600 when accelerating. at cruise, barely louder than stock. i'm trying to decide whether it will be worth it to yank the exhaust and cut/reweld the turndowns pointing directly to the side. i'm also considering changing out the 12" bullets for 18".
