Default oil cooler

Has anyone tried putting an external oil cooler on an F body with a LS1?

yes i have... just did it about 2 weeks ago..

I used a Hayden Sandwich adapter with a built in thermostat, I got a borg warner oil cooler from Ebay for 30$.. (its not the cheap ones that snake through) its the plate style (13"x8"x2")

i mounted it flat, under the driver side nose (where the AIR pump is).. it was too much of a hassle to mount it in front of the A/C condensor, it gets a lot of air flow over it and is secure.

I have an autometer oil temp gauge in the car... my before and after results are as follows:

Before oil cooler:
driving around town, in stop and go traffic.. 210* F
Driving hard in a road race, 10 laps 1.3 miles.. 240-250* F
Highway driving and a sustained speed of 75mph for over an hour.. 200-210* F

After oil cooler install:
Driving around town, stop and go traffic... 185-195*F
Driving hard in a road race, 10 laps 1.3 miles.. 220-235*F
Highway driving at a sustained speed of 80-85mph.. 190-195*F

pretty awesome, total cost of supplies was around 65$.. i used rubber hose(for oil and gas) instead of braided line, and barb fittings instead of AN.. afterall no one is going to see under my car.. plus braided line is overkill..

for both before and After.. I am using Mobil 10w-30 synthetic blend 7500, Purealator oil filter. I had to add about 3/4 - 1 full extra quart of oil to bring the dipstick level back to normal.

hope this helps

Sandwich style? between the oil filter and oil pan is it screw on and where did you get it.
I was thinking about getting a set of truck cooler lines that bolt on to the oil pan and running custom lines

not sure when i'll have the car up on stands again.. i only have my camera phone to take pics with which it sucks..

I got the adapter off Ebay, it is a Hayden sandwich adapter.. i'll see if i still have the box, because the part # was NOT on the part itself. I originally got it for my TPI camaro about a year ago.. and it was too small.. then i got the LS1.. and remembered I had this adapter.. i had a spare oil filter.. and fitted it.. worked.. I beleive the same adapter is for import cars, that use the 13/16 thread fitting..

when i get home, i'll search around for the box and see if i can pull a part # for you guys.

i searched all weekend for the box of the sandwich adapter.. couldnt find it, must have thrown it out.. and there is no part # on it.. i looked at it before i installed it. Sorry guys.. i did my best.. but like i said above.. its the same adapter for import cars, because the LS1 uses the small filter with 13/16 thread from Hayden.

Hey i just took a look at the adapter from summit.. you "might" have an issue with the lines .. here is why..

that adapter sits flush to the block.. notice that adapters screw in fitting are almost flush with the top part of it... my adapter had a 3/8" of adapter before the screw in lines, making the lines lower from the block itself..

let me know how it works out.. i'm trying to find a picture of my adapter so you guys know what im talking about...

Here is a pic of the oil filter adapter that i got from summit racing. It works great if ground clearance is not an issue on your car, but my chevelle is lowered and it would be scary to think that the filter is hanging down that far. So the only other way to run a cooler is to do a remote mount oil filter as well lot of hoses if ya aske me. Is there even much benefit from doing this? or is it just a piece of mind thing?

well thanks for the pics. i am pretty sure i am going to be ordering one. it does hang kinda low though. just dont do any offroading i guess lol. my y pipe hangs kinda low so i am sure that this will be ok. my oil runs at 210 on the highway here so i think i need it. i have seen it as high as 240-250 when being really hard on it so i think it is necessary for me. thanks again for the pics

It is near the front end, so the tires should compensate for where the filter is located.
