You can pull the 4 from the drivers side and put them on the passenger side and vice versa. Then if the tick switches sides, you'll know for sure it's a wire.

so welded the exhaust straight thru and there does not seem to be the tick anymore, but I need more driving for sure man it sounds a lot better already though. Also it eliminated the flange bumping into my heatshield

Ok, I'm about ready to run this car off a cliff.....

Fuel trims are much leaner on the ticking drivers side (+4 to +6 over the pass side) of the engine so that further points to an exhaust leak. The only problem is it's getting rapidly worse and I CAN'T FIND IT!

I've pulled the header loose and retorqued it from the center out, checked the collectors and AIR blockoff and o2 sensor. I can't find any carbon soot ANYWHERE and I can't find the source of the leak. Any ideas?!?!?!?

It had the same tick before the header install but it wasn't progressing any so I let it be. I got new gaskets just for the purpose of fixing this tick and now i'm getting frustrated. I refuse to accept that it's a lifter because I've heard lifters and exhaust leaks before and this sounds 100% like an exhaust leak. I want to verify this 150% before I pull the motor apart to check the lifters.

Like I said before, if you're looking for an exhaust leak, try this: Have an assistant clog the exhaust outlets with rags (he'll have to hold the rags in, or the pressure will force them out.), meantime you can move around the car and locate any exhaust leaks. The exhaust note gets quiet while any exhaust leak gets loud. It works every time!

I have tried this, the problem is that the area where the leaks appeare to be coming from are inaccessible so I can't pinpoint them exactly. I put the cap on the cutout and ran the crap out of the car to see if I could find the carbon tracks from the leak and nothing.

Nothing from around the header flanges, nothing around the collectors nor nothing at the O2 sensor area. It's coming from the header area though near the head. Or at least that's what it sounds like.

Since you can't get down in there to really listen, you can't pinpoint it.

...Another idea lol....find the smoke.

Use that stuff, i forget the name of it, you add it to the throttle body to "clean" things out. It make the car smoke like crazy. I figure it might help you find escaping exhaust, especially if you combine it with clogging the tailpipes.

I was thinking that also but I can't remember what to put in there, lol. I'd like to find something, even if I have to shove a smoke bomb up the tail pipe!

I'm going to get it on a lift today and see if we can find something from the bottom. Hopefully, we'll find it.

Gillbot, I hope you get to the bottom of this ticking noise you are having. Good luck and keep us posted.

My car ticks like a champ too. Took the pass valve cover off and it stopped. put it back on and halfway down the road it started again (think i scared it). Its definatly the most annoying thing ever.

On the lift it sounds as though it's coming from the collector area where the 4 tubes are welded together. Now I get to pull the header off and check all those welds and figure out how I can get it rewelded if it is leaking there.

Default ticking noise

alright, i don't claim to know everything but i can tell you exactly waht happend to my car. I too had the ticking noise, granted it wasn't an Ls1 but it was still a 350. the ticking got gradually worse and i advise no one to keep running it. find out if it's an exhaust leak which is easy compared to tearing the engine down. tighten the headers, which you already did, and check for leaks, which you already did. if you can't pin point where it's coming from but you're positive its a leak, good, just find a way to get to the leak. now, for the bad news. my lifters were hitting the cam and wearing each other down to the point where the valve wouldn't open causing much more trouble than i needed. we took it apart and replaced the rocker arm and pushrod and lifter and cam and put it all back together. it tore the cam apart again, the same lobe both times. I suggest you stop with what you're doing (i.e. running the hell out of it) and replace the pushrods and lifters again. make sure the cam is still good. i know it's not waht you want to do, but it may be waht you need to do. good luck with your problem hopefully you had better luck than i did.

if it's an exhaust leak, you're lucky.

It's finally nice to pull up to a stoplight without looking around to see if anyone notice my car was ticking like a time-bomb .

all you hear now is my slp d/d when i put my foot down !!

I'm almost 100% sure it's an exhaust leak. I just need to pull the header off and verify it now. It's coming from the center of the merge collector between all 4 pipes.
