Default Ticking sound....

Ok, my wife's '01 T/A had the infamous exhaust tick. I looked everywhere and couldn't find it so I gave up.

The other day I got around to installing her headers and the #7 plug came out by hand.

I went ahead and installed the headers with new gaskets and changed the plugs. Fired the car up, yep... STILL TICKS! I'm guessing the seat for the plug is bad? How to fix that?!?

Seems to me that its the lifters. I too have this problem, i was told it could go on harmless for 10,000+ miles..... or break within 100miles. 5k miles and im still good.

Sounds like axhaust but it could be the lifters I guess. I'm still going to check the seat on that plug though.

Mine's been doing it for 18,000, even with new lifters, which I installed SPECIFICALLY to try and get rid of it. The last 7000 has had an F14 cam. I've replaced plugs, wires, tightened exaust bolts, new exhaust gaskets, tightened band clamps, etc. I still can't find it.

It seems like it will go away, untill I rhomp it, then it comes back with a vengance. Diddn't you know this site used to be called LS1tick.com?

My car ticks also. It is most noticable at low rpms in 4th gear (converter locked) while accelerating. It all started after the headers...

Yeah, it seemed to torque down ok but I'm not so sure the seat isn't messed up from the previous plug or at least unever due to carbon buildup around it.

I plan on pulling it out and checking/cleaning it the best I can. I'm hoping that's the issue.

nope I think the ticking we are all hearing is the valvetrain! headers make you hear it more. ls1 essentially have a high lift cam stock. Like everyone else says I noticed the tick once I put on headers, and no its not an exhaust leak because we have checked with vaccum tubing

Mine doesn't sound like that and mine has a much more aggressive cam.

its valvetrain noise from the headers. put it on a lift and put you're ear upto the header and you will hear the sound coming right from the headers.

yeah not piston slap by any means a lite ticking noise for all of us who listen too much, and yes I agree its mainly due to the headers, those of you who no longer here this noise have probably gone with different size pushrods...it seems to help alot especially with cams instead of 7.4 it's 7.45 or something along those line

It ticked before the headers and mine doesn't tick like this at all. Both have MAC headers, hers has a 224/222 113lsa cam and mine has the tr230 cam. Hers ticks ALOT.

It will leak compression and make a ticking sound if it's not torqued down enough to crush the washer.

Brand new aftermarket pushrods went in when I did the cam and none of the stockers were bent when pulled.

There is no washer, they are a tapered seat. I'm thinking that when the last one got loose, there is some carbon buildup around the seat not allowing the new plug to seal properly. What's the best way to clear out that carbon buildup?

I dont think that this is your problem but it sounds promising...I would take a vaccum and some cleaner and clean the hole and vaccum it just to make sure nothing got up in the plug hole. Seems odd though
