I,ve got about 65000 miles on my car and I beleive I'm gonna get the water pump and hoses changed before they go out me. Whats the longest and shortest a water pump has gone. I changed my serpintine belt yesterday and now every once in a while I'll notice a slight whistle could this be the water pump or my lid making that noise or could the belt make the noise. The noise is not constant thats why I think its not the pump and its only when I'm moving. Thanks

The water pump is more of a "if it ain't broke dont fix it" type of part. If it's not giving you any problems, then there is no reason to change it. Is it making noises? Are you having problems cooling? If not, then leave it alone..
FWIW, I have a couple of buddies with over 100K on their 98 LS1's and the stock WP is still working perfectly..

I have 78K, w/ no probs. I have a cam install coming up, & thought about swapping out the water pump --- but the universal advice I got was to leave it alone.

I've got an '89 Bird with 110k miles on it, never touched the water pump. Had an '80 Caprice as my first car with 180k+ on it, never had the water pump go out. For that part, I'm another one of the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" guys. There's really not much that can go wrong with it, so unless the bearings go out and it starts to make noise and the car runs a little hotter, its fine. And if it does go out, its not a terribly hard part to change.
