Default Cut-out or No Cut-out

Hey guys,

I have a stock 02 WS.6. The only mods as of now are an SLP lid and MAF, and k&n filter. I have an SLP y-pipe and loudmouth that I am having installed on Saturday. I have no intension of doing headers. My question is whether or not to put an electronic cutout in for that "real loud" take-off, or will it not sound that great without headers. I know the loudmouth will sound pretty loud without it, but I was just wondering if I should go the extra distance with a cutout?

Let me know what you guys think.

With a loudmouth it may not be worth it, You may see a couple ponies though and it will be louder as well. Once you do have headers I would definetly go for it then.

In my opinion the loudmouth is going to be pretty loud and will flow almost as well as the cut-out. I know alot of cars that have loud mouth and are just as loud or louder than me with my cut out open. But if you want the extra couple of ponies go for it. Its a good cheap mod too.

I hated the sound of that cutout. The best mod I did was taking it back off!

I honestly dont think thats its gona be any difference. Its just a matter of where you want your exhuast to exit. I have a friend with a cut out and if im getting in on the passenger side and im wearing shorts, I better be in before he fires it up because is aimed right where I stand

i think you should take your whole exhaust off, starting after the cats....thats pretty loud when you do that...makes you want to go

You can't beat the flow of a cuttout and if it's electric, you can still have a quiet exhaust at the flip of a switch. One of my favorite mods for sure.

Paul,

I just had the "zed" style cutout installed on my 02 WS6. I only have a lid. I can tell you that the sound is great. I like it a lot better than the loudmouth. The exhaust is not even all that loud through the cutout. I get a tiny bit of resonance from about 2300-2500 rpms, but nothing like the drone of the loudmouth. I was planning on putting a qtp electric cutout on, but after driving it around for a week, I don't know if I'll even bother. The sound is really unobtrusive in the car and deep and strong outside. I would see about returning that loudmouth of yours and spending the $40(installed) on a "zed" style cutout instead.

If you'd like, I can get some video of the cutout for you. Just drop me an e-mail at russellfulks@hotmail.com

Ditto what snake-eater said. I love the fact that my car still has the stock muffler with little stock pea-shooter exhaust tips. My dump is after the y-pipe, right before the axle.

On the other hand, if you're going for the Loud mouth, it'll sound great without doing headers.

Okay, many if not all of you have said that the cut-out sounds awesome. But is this with a bone stock engine, or are you referring to an engine with LT's and other mods?

Save your money on the loudmouth, and get the electonic cutout. The cut out will flow better than the loudmouth (hence it eleminates the exhaust)and you can control how much it opens, so it can be as loud as you want it to be. With the $700 you save on the exhaust, you can buy a set of headers, and make a lot more power. Just my .02. Just something to think about!

I just got my QTEC last night, and am installing it today. My car is bone stock except for MTI lid and K&N filter. I also descreened the MAF. So I will let you know this afternoon. My car is on the lift as we speak. I'm just waiting for it to cool off before I go out there and install. That and I need my daily dose of caffine.

Paul, my engine is bone stock and I think the "zed" cutout is awesome. I sent you a couple pics and I'll get some audio tonight for you. Seriously, the cutout will sound so much better than the lousymouth and will cost less (even with the $150 QTP electric switch). Maybe SnakeEater can take some video of his traditional cutout so that we can compare?

By the way, here is a link to a cutout in the traditional location

http://www.quicktimeperformance.com/QTEC/QTECToxic.MPG

This is toxictexan's car and I believe it was pretty much stock. If the link doesn't work, just go to quicktime's web page and click on the "98 Camaro Z28 LS1" link for the video.

Well I just put in the QTEC. I tell you what it took some time, but it was well worth it. The sound is absolutely awesome!!! SOTP feel is great. The only thing I don't like: It kinda feels like I lost some low end torque. I awesume this is because I have less back pressure now, and the torque has just moved up in the RPM curve. But the car is definately faster, and the sound rocks. By the way, the rest of my exhaust is completely stock. I must give my props to Barry at QTP, my parts where here in just a week and a half, (he told me it would take 3) He has one hell of a product on his hands. When it comes to the best mod for the $ this is on the top of my list. Seriously think about it guys; $700 for a quality cat-back that might give you 25hp, or $180 for the QTEC, that produces a dyno proven 6 RWHP & TQ MORE THAN the "quality cat-back." Hmmm!!!!!!!!! I wonder what I'm going to spend the extra $520 on that I saved????? Best bet: Save up for a set of QTP headers, y-pipe, and hi-flow cats!!!!!!
