Default 1998 LS1 Oil pressure sending unit

Ok guys I broke the oil pressure sending unit while trying to do the ls6 intake swap.

How do I remove the broken part of the sensor stuck down in there?

Also whats the different between the 98 and the 99-02 unit?

Anyone happen to have the part number of the 98 sensor on hand? Also, would the 99-02 sensor work?

I searched but couldn't find the part number.

thanks in advance!

this question is asked about 5 times a week..

SEARCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you need a Oil Pressure sending unit socket.. sold for $5 at autozone..

if you're lucky.. you can also pick up the sending unit from autozone if they have one in stock, if not.. its a 3 day wait.. or go to a dealer..

If you would have read properly, I clearly stated that I needed to know the difference between the 98's and the 99-02. I searched before I posted and couldn't find anything on the 98 oil pressure sending unit.

Do I need the socket for a broken sensor?

If I remember right the hex head of the unit (the part that the socket grips) is down just enough to where a large crescent wrench can't grip it. I broke mine too and just hand tightened it (yeah I know it's bad but it's lasted a year and a half now w/ no leaks). I'll probably go get the socket soon just for piece of mind.

Don't know the difference between the two, but the PN is different.

98 - 12559781
99-02 - 12562267

To answer this for future readers, because I had to figure this out for myself. The sending units work differently. The 98 unit actually reads actively referenced oil pressure. The 99-02 variant is a desensitized "dummy-like" sending unit. The 98 reflects accurately, as it can by design, the current oil pressure and has TWO PINS on the connector. The 99+ has only ONE PIN.

the socket is a 1 1/16 i believe, I just bought one to replace my faulty one last week. easiest way by far is to remove the intake manifold to replace.

i just did a ls6 intake swap.

ordered one from summit racing and the oil pressure sending unit was for a 00-02 which the tread diameter was too small.

the 98-99 is a bigger diameter

so make sure u get the correct year.

i ordered it from advance auto

I also have some experience with this from when I did my LS6 swap in my '98. I ordered what I thought was a '98 sending unit, but when I installed it, the pressure read VERY high and the needle was "jumpy" when I revved the motor. Grabbed the sensor off my '98 and installed it and all was well. I didn't check the part numbers at the time and apparently, the dealership sent me one from a '99...
