Default Squeaky belt, belt lube=a bad idea???

So my serpentine belt is chirping, sounds like baby birds under my hood. It only does this when its wet outside or cold. Sometimes it goes away when the car warms up, sometimes not. I replaced the main serpentine belt about 40,000 miles ago along with the idler pulley, as recommened by install university

The problem has been nonexistent since I did that, until recently. I'm going to sell the car, so I really don't want to spend any money. I've heard one person tell me that belt lube works great, and another that said it gummed up his pulleys, caused the belt to slip and still didn't stop the squeak.

It's not the belt itself that's squealing.

Lube the belt and watch it not spin the accessory anymore.

Hope it's not the water pump or alternator...

Its most likely the pully that is between the powersteering pump and alt. I just had to replace mine for the same reason.

I would try some belt conditioner and see if the chirping goes away. If it works, spray some on the belt before you sell the car. Eventually the chirping will come back but it won't be your problem anymore.

I'm actually having the same exact problem. And its only when the car is cold.

I've used a stethoscope and I believe I've narrowed it down to the water pump. I'm hoping my hearing is just off though because that water pump hasn't even seen 10K miles yet.

Me too except I haven't checked my baby's pulse yet Maybe I should do that. First time I noticed it was after installing an underdrive pulley though but that should put less stress on the pulleys

Its most likely the idler pulley. I have had to replace them on all of the last 3 LS1 fbodies i have owned. Its annoying to hear that chirping sound.

I replaced the idler pulley~40k miles ago. I put on the revised part that they specified in the TSB, so that's why I'm kind of perplexed. Unless the revised part is a piece of junk just like the orginal. Also the water pump isn't leaking.

Be sure to also replace the alternator bracket/mount as described in the TSB, else you will continue to have the same problem even if you replace the idler pulley with the new part. The mount for the pulley on the alternator bracket is the source of the problem, as the original bracket positions the idler pulley too far inward, causing uneven tension on the pulley, hence the premature wear and noise.

The replacement bracket (along with the new pulley) positions the pulley 2-3mm outward, creating even tension on the belt, and a permanent fix to the problem.

Hope this helps.

My car also does it when its cold. Then when it warms up the noise goes away.

Thank you. I didn't replace the bracket, just the pulley.

i replaced either the idler pulley or the belt tensioner, which ever was cheaper and my chirping went away (and a new belt).

I replaced the idler pulley and the tensioner pulley on my serp belt, still had the problem. Then yesterday I took off my a/c belt, and the sound went away. Guess I need to replace my a/c pulleys again.

99% of the time the squeak is coming from the tensioner spring.

Replace the stock one with a Katech tensioner and the sqeak will go away.
