LS6 intake vs. ported LS6 intake?
Does anybody have, or know of any documented gains of porting the intake vs. leaving it stock? I am picking one up this weekend and want to know if it worth doing it or not before I put it on.

I mean porting the LS6 intake or not porting the LS6 intake. Any gains that anyone knows of?

I think the LS6 intake is ported enough for peoples needs...even the guys with the big cube motors still have the regular LS6 intake...

There have been a few tuners attempt to port the LS1/LS6 intakes without success. That composite material is very hard to work with.
I "think" one tuner has done it, but I am not for sure. However, I don't think you'll be seeing to many "ported" LS1 intakes around.

FWIH the posted intake are really just cutting the inside runners shorter(given the plenum more effective area) Slight gains have been made but GM did a great job making the engine think it has a 7" runner instead of a 14" runner

I was down at Cartek one day and watched as julio ported out an LS6 intake with a demel and a fine polishing bit. Just saying that's one tuner that does it.

I think I saw a comment that said basically if an LS6 intake is worth 15hp over an LS1 intake on a heads & cam or stroker motor the ported LS6 intake will probably be worth about 7 more than just the LS6 intake. In other words a CarTek ported LS6 intake should be worth about 20-22hp over a LS1 intake on a H & C or stroker

Re: LS6 intake vs. ported LS6 intake?
So what does Cartech do? I have an LS6 intake and a dremel, and I'd like to port mine. Anyone tried removing those support bars in the center of the intake?

Cartek does it, though last I heard he only liked to sell it with a set of his heads.
MTI did one for SW's car that posted good hp gains, at the expense of some torque. (ported LS6).

I don't know exactly what he does, I was trying to watch him without being annoying. I did notice he went slow and it took a while. He moved up and down while doing it (inside the intake). Stopping every so often to turn it over and blow it out.

Re: LS6 intake vs. ported LS6 intake?
Ray, I have ported several intakes now with good results. All gained power over the stock ports. The bigger the cam the more gains you will see. You can also look at your MAP during a WOT pull. If you see less than 100 kPaA, you are pulling a vacume from somewhere and that means power loss. I see more gains with ported intakes when used in conjunction with the LS6 MAF and BBK TB.

How exactly did you do this? dremel? <img src="images/icons/confused.gif" border="0"> If so what type of abrasive did you use?
Thanks for the help

Re: LS6 intake vs. ported LS6 intake?
You can use standard cylinder head porting tools. DO NOT USE A DREMEL! Measure the cylinder head ports and port match the intake ports. Be careful when doing the rough cut but don't be afraid as there is quite a bit of material on the side walls. Don't cut the roof or floor too much and be careful to keep the contour of the side walls. Open up the TB inlet to match your TB. If you use a BBK, you will need to get rid of the adapter plate that comes with it. You will also not be able to use the rubber gasket but RTV instead. Make sure you finish the rough cut with a 400 paper roll. It really isn't that hard.
Hope this helps.

Re: LS6 intake vs. ported LS6 intake?
If you take a T Mike (I did) and measure a ls6 runner you'll find that it gets bigger in cross-sectional area about one inch into the runner from the head port side. I took a dremel(with a head porting attachment) and carefully opened the port up to the same dimension as my head intake port (the stock ls6 outlet was smaller than the head inlet). Did not dyno but why have it neck down smaller than the head inlet? Good point about the tb side Mikey...didn't look at it.
