Default thinking about !powersteering cooler.... not a DD. thoughts?

right now i've got the WHOLE car apart. when i put it back together i would like to delete the p/s cooler. the car sees a 400mile round trip every now and then (all hwy). but probably driven around 5k a year, mostly racing & to go racing.

what are the chances of overheating & burning my p/s pump without the cooler? i know a few model cars came without them but i've also seen cars putting them on because of overheating failures.

*anyone interested in buying it?

I was under the impression that only 1LEs got the power steering cooler. I've got a Z28 and I autox it regularly, so it's basically 4000-6000 rpm and constant turning for 1-2 mins. My pump is louder than hell during and after the runs but it hasn't failed on me, for street driving you should definitely be good to go.

thanks man. if im not mistaken, all of the SS's & WS-6's got the p/s cooler. i'm sure of this for the 98-99's. 00 up may be a little different.

my ws6 has one on it. really doesn't cool anything IMO, you're running the PS fluid thru a pipe that has hot coolant in it, how much cooling is that really doing?

Mine's coming off next time I have to drain the radiator for whatever reason (probably an elec. water pump install)

Easy to do, loop the line at the rack/pump so it just skips the cooler, and get the hose for a car that doesn't have the cooler. Simple, probabaly a lb or 2 off the car too.

My '02 Z28 had one. Seems like it was just on the SS and WS6 from '98-00. I think it came stock on all of the '01+ cars. I wouldn't even worry about it unless you do alot of autocross.

My SS has one on it. Why are you wanting to get rid of it though? Get a K member if you are trying to shave some actual weight.

It is more underhood clutter... I'll probably end up getting rid of mine personally whenI do the waterpump. The k member, a arms, ps, abs/tcs, lw brakes and manual brake master will all probably go on at once, so at that point the power steering will go away all together.

Then, there will be very little clutter

Good call. If you do a rack, then that makes total since as well.

definately gonna do the rack at the same time. It's gonna end up a huge project, but the 200 lbs of weight it will remove whenI finally do it will be worth it.

That's after this year's projects (6 pt, kirkey's get mounted with the harnesses, one 1/4 that's got fubar paint gets fixed and the intenna hole gets shaved, lw carpet, new street tires, 28 inch et drags get screwed to the bogarts, et fornts go on in plce of the sportsman fronts, hitch goes on my truck to trailer this bitch around, and a stainless dual system ARH will build on the car too, and hopefully nitrous

I've got a never ending project, with abotu 10% of the budget I really need to finish this thing LOL.

This is a really good idea! Thanks fellaz. I'm tired of dealing with it. What about the lines? Cap them off?
