See the banners on the right side of this page? Click on one of them, Thunder Racing, T Byrne, so and so on. Just pick one...

They all sell decent t-stat's. I run the 160 Hypertech t-stat.

Would I need to get the PCM tuned if I got the 160 or modified the stock to 160?

Well this may be a good chance to clear up a debate over cooler Thermostats. I know that running the cooler one will give a dense fuel charge but the long term use of the 160 seems to cause the engine to gum up a LOT faster. Valves turn black, plugs, exhaust, cats clog and the tarnish on the inside of the engine can cause issues.

Oil is deveolped for engines running at a certain temp to help keep the engine clean inside, so we are cooling the engine down and puting a bigger fuel load in without much thought to the what it will do the to oil/engine. Dont get me wrong I do the same thing as everyone else but I have started loking at it closer and the mechanics seem to be right when they say I am gumming up my engine by doing it on a daily driver. I am thinking 180 for a daily driver is a smarter way to go and if your headed to the track, change the stat and set the fan when you change the tires and open the cutout. Just an observation from a rookie.

Ozz, I've been told that also and it does make good sense. I have a 172 modified stock stat. If I recall correctly, this was 2 years ago, I have the fans coming on with Hypertech at 185. Everything stays nice and fresh. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Since I published that writeup I have tested 2 of those $80 stats from 2 vendors and both claimed to be 178 degrees, yet both were more like 162 degrees in my car with a larger radiator.

You can just as well go to a hardware store and buy a few small washers and stack a few on each other to make the shim depth you want.

Heck they cost a few pennies each, far cheaper and you have full control of what opening temp you want over those high profit so called custom stock stats with
washers in them :-(

So the stock you're using for shims is washers the same diameter as the shaft? Do you happen to know the diameter?

Also (just to make sure!) when you say for example .101 shim, you're talking in inches, correct??

Thanks!

3/16ths is width of shim and yes to inches.

You may want to have different shims for winter, summer and race conditions but I assume most people would just get a stat opening of like 175 degrees and keep it that way.

Thanks John!

And 175 is just about what I was shooting for! (170-175)
