Default installed SLP lid now it pings bad

i just threw my SLP lid on and everything is hooked up fine. i dont have a SES light and its running really strong, im really impressed with the power gains.

however at higher RPM at full throttle it pings really bad. prior to the lid i did sometimes notice a very quiet ping at rare occations, but now its very noticeable.

this is the only mod to the car. its got 44,000 miles and has had the plugs changed recently (just bought the car so dont know when, but they are champions so i know its been done).

well its not the lid that did it. every see if you have carbon build up?

I wouldn't think changing the lid would really make any difference as far as the pinging, but did you maybe jar a sensor or something when you put it in? Or maybe its the plugs or wires?

i know the lid itself didnt cause this, but i assume more air from the lid causes the pcm to up the fuel and make the existing ping worse.

i always use 91 so im going to try the fuel filter and a good combustion cleaning this weekend. im also thinking maybe the current champion plugs arent iridium. im going to cover those simple things first.

did u tighten all the clamps? you might be getting air in past the MAF giving the pcm a false reading

I have the same issue so I run a used mass air translator I bought off here. Just a lid made my fuels trims lean.

I would give the maf a good cleaning with maf cleaner or electronic cleaner.

might need a good seafoam treatment to get rid of the carbon buildup. most likely if the car has never had a oil catch can most likely the inside of the intake have some oil residue.

my car really was pinging after lid, filter, and catback.

after changing the plugs, seafoaming the bottom end of engine, intake of the engine, fuel system, and installing a catch can no more knocking at all.

sounds like ur running lean. if it was there before and made it more noticeable after lid install then u need a tune. seafoam might help but u increased the intake air and pcm cant keep up. calibration is what is needed. I would'nt run wot till pinging is gone. car is running too lean and the #7 piston usually runs the leanest tuned. get it tuned.....

What's timing are you running? add some octane boost and see if that temporarily fixes it

Find someone who has Autotap or any scanner with live data to know what your fuel trims are.

the adaptive fuel trim is switches between -4% to +9%. so i know theres no issues there.

i tried the carbon cleaning and that seemed to make a difference. either that or there was a loose clamp and r/r-ing the lid for the carbon cleaning corrected that.

thanks guys.

Do you have a descreened MAF? Differences in how the airflow
is biased by curves in the lid-neck, might alter its response a
bit. Try rotating the MAF 90, -90, 180 degrees from its normal
orientation and see what happens to the ping. You might inspect
the MAF for prior buggery, maybe clean it while it's out in case
previous owner used an oiled filter, etc.

well i have heard of such things with descreening a MAF which is why this car i've left that alone.

however i had my car on the dyno today and they actually stopped in the middle of the second run cuz they said they thought they heard it pinging. they tried again and said slight, slight pinging and the A/F was a bit on the lean side, but it wasnt bad enough for them to stop.

im wondering now...whats this catch can someone mentioned? it did blow a bit of smoke while on the dyno. and ive heard some LS1s like to burn oil...damn maybe i just need plugs.

The PVC system on our cars is poorly designed and allows oil (sometimes a lot) through to the TB and intake.

Do a search for "catch can" and you'll find many topics about them. Next to, "how will this exhaust system sound?" this is probably one of the most discussed issues. You'll find catch cans that are designed specifically for the purpose to catch cans you can build yourself from "Home Depot" parts. I have a home built system with two air seperators and it works great.

the carbon treatment can make it smoke alot, like seafoam, I'd put some good plugs in, that might cure it, maybe the gap is off.

Are u sure its pinging? b/c a lid will add more engine noise b/c it removes that baffle, if not I would check the gap on the plugs along with the basic tune up components

well the first instance, yes, it was ping. definitely. but on the dyno i didnt hear it the tuning guys did. so maybe that was the lid making noised more noticeable.

i'll search about that catch can. thanks guys.

update

today my low oil light came on. my engine doesnt leak a drop. i guess this explains the ping. i bought a pcv valve today and i'll throw that in tomorrow and see what happens. if it doesnt fix it i'll have to get a catch can. if that doesnt fix it...i guess im buying an overhaul kit lol
