Default Bad ticking noise

Recently I have been hearing a ticking noise coming from engine. It usually happens about 2-4 thousand rmps. Doesn't happen at idle or in neutral. Also usually happens in 2-5 gears. I hardly happens in 1st or 6th. The only thing I have recently done to the car is cut the exhaust off just before the rear axle, it has been clanging around so thats why I think to believe it is just a rattle but the sound gets louder as I get on it.

I am just paranoid

What do you guy suggest?

Thanks a ton!

Check your plugs and wires. You may have a loose/cracked plug or one or more of your wires might not be all the way seated on the plug.

Ill check my plugs and wires. Its almos like a knocking vs a ticking noise. its a higher pitch knock/ticking

Possibly a bent push rod.

Were you able to pin-point a location of the tick? Push rods are easy to check, I bet 3 when I miss shifted at the track. Did the noise happen before you cut the exhaust? Check around to try and find where its ticking.

No the ticking noise didn't happen before I cut off the exhaust...I found a heat shield by the drivers side manifold, its dangling...But this is a constant almost rod knock like...almost a pinging...

My driver side ticks around 2000. Below that and above 2200-2300 it goes away.

Im just tolerating it for now. When I put a cam back in the car I will diagnose it.

I have the same thing with my car. When you let off the gas after hard acceleration do you hear it ticking/pinging syncopated with the deceleration of the motor?

possibly detonation/ping. possibilities: dirty or bad MAF sensor, IAT sensor, dirty TB (clean TB, IAC, and TPS sensors), dirty air filter, or excessive filter oil being sucked into the intake manifold reaching the pistons

ha u guys wont believe this, when i bought this car 6 or 7 months ago i drove it without checking the air filter because i just assumed it was fine because it had recently been put on the car. I went to change the filter/clean it about a week or so ago and the damn filter was totally detached and laying on the plastic housing under the car lol. i was so pissed...wonder what kind of air my engine was sucking in?

clean all the parts i listed in my above post. it helps to remove the intake manifold and clean the insides too (if u wanna remove it, i would but i love taking my car apart and putting it back together)

yep it could be your problem. i dirty filter will cause detonation/ping. dirty filters cause the sensors to have false readings causing knock and dirt inside your intake may reach the pistons causing knock

after cleaning all the sensors, it doesnt hurt to run fuel system cleaner in the car. helps remove carbon buildup and all kinds of dirt

carbon buildup causes knock too known as 'carbon knock'

A broken lifter will typically make a "ticking" noise, and it does speed up with RPM. Being able to pin point a location for the tick would help a lot.

I am guessing it was my stock manifold heat shield cause I bent it back so it wouldn't rattle agaisn't anything and I haven't heard it since.

who knows...
