Default How hot do headers get?

Specifically right where the AIR stem is. Anyone know for sure? I searched and couldn't find anything. I have Hooker Ceramic Coated Longtubes.

The best way to measure is to grab one of the primary tubes. The more burnt your hand gets..the hotter it is.

But right there by the AIR coming off the head.... I'd guess....~1000?

Hot enough to melt plastic...hope that isn't why you are asking. Just in case, use a metal block off plate on your headers please.

With an IR gun, I've measured ~240*F on a stainless header primary at idle. At WOT, I'd imagine it's probably at least double that.

I've heard of exhaust parts reaching up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. lol at you guys saying 1000 degrees. At that temp, you'd melt the aluminum heads

Put and Exhaust Gas temperature sensor on one of the primaries and watch the gauge... Exhaust gases are well in the 1000 deg or more range no problem when you are hard on the car. Also its no uncommon to see headers glow with a dark cherry color when you are hard on them and materials don't glow red until they are around 1000 degrees. Diesels and forced inductions cars have even higher Exhaust gas temperatures usually the limit being around 1400 deg. So 1000 degrees or more can easily happen but under normal driving conditions part throttle and such it will be a lot cooler.

Could just mean you didn't prep the headers right.

Let me put it this way. My buddy had an exhaust temp sensor in his exhaust in his Mustang and it would be around 400 degrees when getting on it. Not sure where in the exhaust he put it. I think around where the cats would be if memory serves correctly.

just because exhaust temperatures are that hot doesn't mean that all the thermodynamic energy is transfered to the header, or the head for that matter. Heat exchange is not instantaneous, and takes place over a period of time. Also, the air on the outside of the header had a cooling effect that partially counteracts the egt gases.

that paint doesnt cure for ONE week. ALL coats have to be sprayed within one hour of each other. read directions.

Hmmm. Well, i ask because when i was replacing my clutch master cylinder, my dad tried to help by moving the AIR line out of the way. I said ok, but told him to take it off at the header, but he refused and got a big wrench and tried to unscrew that big nut on the AIR line. Needless to say, all that torque broke the stem right under the flange.

I was wondering if they reached over 600 degrees F, because that is the max temp for J.B. Weld. My dad wanted to J.B. Weld a bolt in there (yea i know...). While i was on vacation he did manage to force this screw bolt (don't know if there is a better name) halfway in. It feels solid, and i ran the **** out of my car when i got back and it held.

I just noticed that there is a tiny bit of exhaust escaping from there, so i was thinking about maybe J.B. Welding the edges around it. I could get it actually welded, but it seems like its more trouble than it's worth, and i think the J.B. Weld around the edges would work. Do you all? Yes i'm a cheap ***.
