Broken valve spring &$#@%^&%*$# !!!!!
Broken valve spring &$#@%^&%*$# !!!!! Got a flashing SES (I was taking it very easy) Limped home and A-tapped the car. #5 cylinder was misfiring like crazy at anything above idle. At idle it was on par with the rest of the cylinders. Pulled the plug (see picture) I don't have a leak down tester but I did test the compression and it was down to 178-180psi from 200 psi. The car is making a funny tick that is not like a lifter and pretty well runs on 7 cylinders at anthing above idle. I'm going to pull the cover and look at the spring now but does this sound like a broken spring? What are the chances that the valve bent if I was keeping the car below 2K rpms for about 10 miles? PS: no smoking at the pipes.
Re: What are the symptoms of a broken valve spring?............ They're the same as yours Gomer!! Scarey huh? Comp 978 doubles. I'm going to pull the rocker and try and see if the valve is bent.

I just took my 5.3 heads off to install a set of the PP LS6 style and a TSP 231/237 cam and I went with 918's on them instead of the 978's.. I'm not a big fan of the heavy dual springs. Hope your valve isn't bent.
Re: What are the symptoms of a broken valve spring?............ #5 exhaust. If the valve is bent, it is not badly bent. It turns and moves up and down easily although I suspect it has to be bent a bit. I can't be sure either way until I pull the head. I'll probably finish out the season babying the car and then I'll pull them. It's a good thing I was driving like a grandfather when it happened! I am not a fan of Comp springs!

Also, what heads were u using, were the rockers hitting the retainers??? If not, then i am starting to beleive that the extra stress from the rockers hitting the ret wrong was not the problem to begin with. I do not want to be doing spring changes every 3k miles or less....
