Is .014 thousandths too far out of the hole?

Default Is .014 thousandths too far out of the hole?

Hey guys, we're starting to get my bottom end back together and i had the guys measure the piston out of the hole for me so i can get my quench and everything figured out, but the measurement was .014 out of the hole. It is a 6.0 block with a 4.040 bore. It is a Lunati 4.125 crank w/ forged Lunati Pro-billet 6.125 rods. The pistons are Lunati as well. I am going with the TFS 235 heads and i want to make sure everything is right. Thanks guys

Just choose correct thickness gasket and you will be fine. Nothing thinner than .045.

thanks, i was thinking i would need the .052. That would put my quench at 38. What is the farthest anyone has heard of the piston coming out of the hole without any problems?

I had a 408 with 15 thou out.

45 is the thinnest you'd want to run on gaskets. I ran a .40 and had clearance issues when the engine was cold.

My pistons come 0.025" out of the hole! LPE built my 383 stroker, I have no idea why they did it that way.

...so I run 0.052" compressed gasket.

Are you guys checking it correctly? The piston "rocks", you need to measure the highest point, then the lowest and take the average between the 2!

we measured it like that and thats how we came up with the .014.

Did you try checking it half way down the piston where the wrist pin is, because sometimes the "rock" doesn't go all the way.

Mine were measured in the center of the pistons, in between the 2 reliefs, so rocking wouldnt effect the numbers hardly at all.

My 408 pistons were out of the hole .024 thou. Never had any problems. I was running a .063 gasket

Just had a thought about this. If the pistons are protruding above the deck that would put the top ring closer to the combustion chamber. Would it be wise to maybe open up the ring gap another .001" or more?
