or get the 241s ported. honestly if your on a tight budget on a streetcar its not worth gains to have to buy another set of castings especially pricey 243s. the 241 especially when ported aren't that bad. don't get me wrong i haven't done direct comparisons myself but from others results that is my conclusion. for a reference, i have a bit experience porting heads including 241 and 5.3l heads, unfortunately both my pontiac's heads are uncut.
just my .02
just my .02
Your right. The flow difference between the two is minimal at best. Stock for stock I would choose the 243s, but if your having them ported, I'd start with 241s because they are half the price or less. 5.3 heads are great if you want a 1/2 point more compression without having the cut the heads, they also are dirt cheap.

Thread topic is "Heads on a budget" How about Patriot? I picked up .5 in the quarter mile and 5 mph with cheap, budget, 5.3's , You could time my 60' with a calender too. I went 11.89 @ 117 1.79 60' at 1200' elevation. So, with a dead hook this is sub 11.50 car. Not too bad for new casting heads with dual springs, Ti retainers, 2.02 , 1.57 valves, and ported/polished for 1100.00 bucks. 11.89 was my first run of the season, keep in mind I spin the tires in first and roast them going into second. Hell, I've seen 11.20 slips at 117 mph. People love to bash Patriot stuff, I have no complaints.
Edit: I'm unfamiliar with your cam.

We can set you up with porting on your heads or a new set of GM castings at affordable prices! Of course, the LS6 castings will outperform your 241's once ported, but if it's that much of a budget issue, then it's an option.

^^^what kind of numbers are we talking for the 241s ported and deck milled?flow numbers and $ numbers. And im just curious why a set of ported 243s can out perform the same port job on some 241s? Is the runner design just that different and better, I know the chambers are different.

There is a great read on this in the book caled LS1/LS6 Chevy Performance by Chris something or other...theres all kinds of stuff in there, but they also did a test with different casting heads, with different manifolds, etc to do camparisons,,, I want to say the test was done by Agostion racing (?),, anyways,, ported 241's created better flow numbers than the ported 243's up to about the .400 mark, leaving the .500 and .600 marks better on the 243s. Are flow numbers everything?, hell no, but for what you already own, and what little has to be shelled out to make them perform better, it is an option worth checking out. I was trying to find the other threads i had tagged, somw with guys that are running somewhere close to the 10.xx seconds range (i need to find the guy, he's on here) with ported 241's,,
Im no expert, (and really just learning the H/C stuff), but if your cam has a lift of lets just say .550,, would your head flow at .600 even matter? This leads me to believe that for a smaller cam guy or stock cam guy with a lower lift than others with the higher cam lift,, ported 241's might be the way to go to get the best bang for your buck (As like in my case, there are not alot of "bux" to work with to go the 243 route ),,, someone correct me if im way off in my thinking there.

All of our heads are sold outright with no core charges. The only reason we ever want your heads is if we are actually porting your castings for you and send them back to you.

yeah i think i am leaning twords ported 241's 243s are to expensive for the heads and then the cnc job and thats a great price on 1.5 heads from tsp. my cam has .598 so i'm looking to get some more flow from my heads plus i would like to put a fast 90/90 and injectors in there..

It is a great book I have it next to me.Just looking through. There is a new book called LS1-LS7 performance parts. It tests aftermarket performance parts and gives dyno sheets with comparisons to stock and competitor parts. Its a great book also.
