I've never done it either way, but I plan on doing it out the bottom in a friends 1car garage soon. What are the 6x6's or 4x4's for?
I figured I just need some tall jack stands for the rear axle, and a cherry picker to lift the front up high.

I can't find any pics that I already have online of how I used the hoist to pick up the car. But I have a wooden cart that I set the motor and trans on with all the suspension and picked up the car by the rad support. Worked very well. I have done SSdreamz's motor like that and mine twice. I also did a friends motor at my work using a lift. That was nice I had the motor on the floor in 1 hour. But at home on the floor with the cherry picker I can have it out in around 3 hours

don't need to remove bumper.....not needed for strictly pulling motor............ just hood, radiator, and accessories........only thing you have to unbolt from transmission are the bell housing bolts going into block, the top ones are a pain in the *** but you get used to it

I left my hood and bumper on going out the top. After I got it past the motor mounts, I repositioned the balance point forward on the first 4 valley cover bolt holes and got the motor to a 30-45 degree angle so I could walk it back while jacking to clear the hood and radiator support. I used the hook of the cherry picker directly on a generic lifting plate with the 3 hook holes in it, No chains. I had to key two of the holes slightly with a dremel to fit the valley cover hole pattern. I pulled the trans and left the bellhousing.

accessories are taken off if a motor comes out...........if you come through bottom way more work is required than from top, ex. power steering lines + linkage, brake lines maybe, you'd have to remove the transmission (to do it safely anyways) probably some other stuff i'm not recalling......only reason I might go through bottom is I had a two post lift in the garage.......otherwise safer and less work/time to go top

Really very easy to come out the bottum. Take out the DS, torque arm, and Y pipe. Disconnect all electrical connectors. Unbolt AC ompressor from motor. un hook 2 from brake lines from ABS block. disconnect steering shaft.
Then it is a matterof the 4 bolts on Trans crossmember and 6 bolts on the k member.
Hood stays on Radiator stays in the car. Very simple. Headers and all accesories can stay on the motor. Like I said before if I do it at work on a lift I can have the motor out of the car in 1 hour. At home on the floor with a cherry picker I can have it out of the car in under 3 hours.
